• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. CLEANING OIL STRAINER?

I normally change my own oil to save money but in my owners manual it says to clean the oil strainer at certain intervals. I have a parts manual for my ST-S and it lists two oil strainers on the oil tank. One near the bottom front and one on the right side at the bottom. Does anyone that changes their own oil clean the strainers? If so, do you have to replace any parts such as O rings or washers to do it? Thanks for any advice.

Packings, o-rings, gaskets, seal/crush washers...usually says to remove and replace, not re-install. The copper seal crush washer, I have reused them because the dealer didn't have them...just the filter and no filter o-ring.
The strainer on the oil tank has a crimped strap clamp that requires a special tool(Okei?sp), a threaded hose clamp may be possible alternate, but they do tend to tear into the rubber hoses.
There were a few clogged oil tank strainer incidents on here reported, maybe some new ones since then. I have YET to see a local BRP dealer touch that oil tank stainer, even though it's called for. Not sure they even had the tool or the crush seal for the oil tank strainer in stock.

The maintenance manual for the Spyders is available on CD or for download on a computer. It also has a Illustrated Parts manual and a search function. Check in the vehicle section of EBAY literature/manuals...or google midwest manuals/green manuals. Worth having.

Once

I looked it over once, during my first at home oil change, a very long time ago. It was clean. I replaced the factory clamp with an ordinary hose clamp. No problems. That was about twelve thousand miles ago. It's probably about time to check it again during the next oil change.

Yeah..!!

As Coz said pull the hose off remove the strainer clean (so far has always been clean and reinstall replace hose clamp. But I alway change oil around 4,000 miles. Most oils start breaking down around then. Reused parts the first time will replace them next time...

OIL STRAINER

Sine my parts manual lists two strainers on my oil tank, is it only necessary to check the one on the lower right side that has the hose and special clamp that has to be replaced?

Manual only have one strainer and the SE's have two. The higher one is for the HCM and that's why when the oil gets low it sucks air and won't shift properly.

If you're going to clean one may as well do both. Remember the screens are there in case you drop boulders and wads of paper into the tank when checking the oil or filling. They are not likely to be dirty. Still worth doing for the few minutes it takes.

No wonder I've never heard of a second screen.:roflblack:

I am not going to split the crankcase just to clean that one. :yikes:

I know, at my 14K I saw that and said NO FREAKIN WAY!

I doubt any dealer does that screen! :yikes:
Not sure it's suppose to be cleaned either but the service schedule was unclear on that one.

So you know, for my SM5 the tank screen was totally clear. I may not do it again in another 14K.
