What to wear?

Did you sign up for the ride while knowing that this is a rule that the participants must follow?
If you knew, and still showed up in Beach wear...

 Dude; that's just effin' RUDE! :banghead:

Don't sign up for the ride, and everyone will be much more at ease. :D

I was saying that I have seen that in group rides invites. Since most of our rides in Colorado involves the mountains and the weather can drop 40 degrees in a matter of minutes, normally I wear pants and boots or motorcycle shoes. However, none of our group organizers must give a sh**t because it has never been a condition on any rides in Colorado that I have been to on what people wear because it is the riders business what they wear and don’t wear as it should be.

Okay...
The way that I read your post; it seemed that you had been waving the cape in front of the Bull... :D

I'm glad that I was wrong!

I guess I saw an awful lot of Harley riders going to the beach this past weekend on I40. Except for the fact they were going West at the time. Didn't know Tennessee was a big Beach destination! I'm not sure how shorts and T-shirts is beach wear. I wear them all the time unless the social situation requires a more formal attire. I like feeling the sun and the wind while I ride. And so do a lot of other riders. How bout we make a deal? Since I have never called anybody a friggin idiot for their clothing choices, how about you give me that same courtesy? Sounds fair to me.

I wear jeans and a long sleeve light weight, shirt to protect me from the sun. I wear gloves in the winter to keep my hands warm, but none in the summer. Just don't wear shorts, that's really stupid.... the heat from the engine will fry your legs if they aren't protected.

I've been riding 38 years without crashing, I'm not going to let paranoia ruin my ride. If all you can think about is crashing, you shouldn't be riding.

Just be careful, stay trained, enjoy the ride.

Pam

I mostly agree with you on this comment.

There's just something about seeing someone riding a motorcycle in shorts and/or flip flops that tells me they think this is all a big joke. Most of the people I ride with don't wear helmets, which I accept as a personal choice. But none of the riding groups that I belong to will allow anyone on a ride while wearing shorts.

Aside from that, I don't understand how you can expose your skin to the hot pipes and hot engine like that.... not to mention the blazing sun. Jeans protect your skin from all that.

To each is own, I don't try to dictate what other people do. I've seen way too many photos of legs and feet skinned down to the bone because the rider thought he looked cool in his bermuda shorts. Experienced riders, myself included, have absolutely no respect for those who wear shorts on a motorcycle.

Pam

But this one not so much. I agree about the sun protection, BUT if you go for a slide in shorts or jeans you will most likely be in need of some skin graph's. No helmet, IMO you can wear what you want but when they are shoveling you brains off the road there is no fixing that.

I do not disrespect anyone on a bike. No matter what you wear or ride we are all taking a chance. No helmet, shorts, flip flops (I dont at all recommend this) or full gear. Some take more risks than others. That is there choice.

I do wear a helmet, fingerless gloves, jeans and sneakers. An armoured mesh jacket until it gets too hot then it is a t shirt. A mesh jacket does protect you from the sun, BUT it is not cooler than a t shirt IMO.

Regardless of our personal feelings; this is an issue best left to the individual. You will NEVER get a group of this size to agree on a level of safety that everyone will like...

...Nor do they have to! :D
But just make sure that you're prepare to live with the consequences of your decisions; should a ride go "Pear-Shaped" on you! :yikes:

Hush now... this is starting to get good! Hang on now... I am trying to remember where my bathing suit and camera are hehe

What to wear?
It's 98 degrees here in Texas. What are you wearing in the heat that let's you be protected from a slide? We are always wearing helmets and We have just bought some neon yellow mesh jackets. What about pants? I am a big fan of "plan for the worst and hope for the best but we don't want to melt either! Does anyone just wear shorts and t shirts? "

An Update on the Carhart "issue."

I went for a nice 80 mile ride earlier. Checked my trusty steed to see if my new Carhart jeans were causing any collateral damage to my nanner cycle.

No problem whatsoever. No scratches or dings. I do like the Carhart jeans with the double material on the fronts. They work for me for this hot weather riding. I have a couple thousand Carhart miles on the bikes now. Warning: Your results may differ.

I knew the safety issue would come up, but have tried to keep my comments in the ball park of the OP question.

Does the double material on the Carharts help shield your thighs from the blazing sun? That's the problem we have here in Arizona, the sun is so intense that it makes the skin on your thighs feel like it's on fire.

While the Carhart farmer look is kind of cool, I am not real sure two layers of that stiff brown denim would be a lot better than regular jeans if you were sliding down the interstate... I think they would give up the ghost pretty quick. I dunno for sure as I can't afford Carhart duds but that is just my thought. I would think kevlar with some armour would make more sense if you thought you might be road rashing it. Plus the Carhart jeans are hot as all get out (or so I have been told).

Talking about Carhart "jeans" here. No stiff brown denim or farmer look. Although, there is nothing wrong with that. I have the blue denim, and they look like a nice pair of jeans--although--reinforced. They are as soft as my two pair of Kevlar--and--they appear to be thicker on the fronts--however--they are missing the butt padding that is on the Kevlar.

As I stated a bit earlier, we were looking for what to wear when it's hot driving out there. Not discussing any safety ramifications here. That's another subject.

Many of us do not respond well when we are told we are going to die, or become permanently disabled if we do X. Riding a Spyder (keeping with the site mission) is a conscious decision and there can be inherent risks with it.
As I mentioned in an earlier post: I enjoy riding my :spyder2:
I try to drive defensively. I surely want to avoid being involved in an accident. A Corvette came out from behind a school bus today, and roared around it to pass. He missed hitting me head on by about 20 feet. Fortunately, I saw it coming and was able to pull over enough to avoid being tagged by the Vette.

I am still planning on riding. The above did not change my thinking about clothing, or ATGATT.

I am not feeling the "heat" any worse than when I wear the Kevlars. Happily, we do not get blow torch sun. Direct sunlight seems about 10 degrees more than ambient temperature. If you drive under a cloud, the temp feels like it dropped 10 degrees.

Color has a big effect on temperature. Black or blue denim would be worse than khaki or light grey. The lighter colors tend to reflect.

I admire the tough guys that ride without protective gear... back when I had my Yamaha V-Max a group of us went riding on a hot sunday... one of the guys was riding a Harley with tennis shoes - no socks.. a muscle shirt and shorts... well, he hit a brick that was laying on the road.. he hit the asphalt about 50MPH and slid off the road into the gravel where he finally stopped... I can still hear the screams at the emergency room while they were picking gravel out of his road rash legs, back & arms... man was that guy tough.. :sour:

Yeah, but I'll bet he looked real cool riding in those cute shorts :roflblack:

New to Forum, Sorry don,t know how to get onto the forum

I have been reading this forum for 2 yrs. A lot of great info here. Helped me a lot. On 7/15/15 I bought a 2015 RT Limited, Black. It already has over 500 miles on it. I cannot seem to stay off of it. I am retired military. 30+ yrs as a Army Helicopter pilot. 40+ yrs on 2 wheels. I can not stop smiling. Makes people wonder what I have been up to. Anyway I thought I would start off by asking some questions about tires and oil !! LOL !! Just kidding !!! I LOVE MY :spyder2::spyder2:

Sorry I did not do this correctly but I didn't know how else to do it. I will send pictures when I figure this all out.
