Advantage of Vented Windshield?

Cal-sci

Read about the science behind the vent opening from cal-sci... used to reduce the negative pressure behind the wind shield, thus reducing the turbulence or buffeting caused by the air going around and over the windshield. I think that was what I remembered???

Interesting

Now u got me thinking:banghead:

It's a balance. You want to reduce but not eliminate the back pressure. The a Rifle Windscreen on my Kawasaki Concours was often referred to as the bug catcher. The vent funneled bugs right at your face. It did a great job, other than that.

Hello,

I see with different models you can buy vented windshields. What is the advantage?

Thanks!

I had one on my Goldwing (2 motorcycles ago) and loved it. Nice breeze that you can control. I'm going to be ordering a taller vented windshield for my :spyder2:

In 2014 on the RT cutouts were added to the stock windshield that, in my opinion, make buying a vented windshield unnecessary. On my 2013 I had the BRP vented shield and I felt that it was not worth the price. You can not direct the air flow with the BRP vented but can only open or close the vent. If you were going to purchase one I would look for the Goldwing vent as you can direct the air flow.

I like the adjustable side vents and Baker Built Air Wings for directing air on me in the heat and blocking it in cold.

I have one on my spyder. You don't really feel the air coming from the open vent unless you put your hand right up to it. But it does take care of the buffeting when it is open. I closed it just to see the difference and it was very noticeable. The wife really likes it when she is on back and says it really keeps the wind buffeting down to almost nothing on her when vent is open. Happy wife, Happy life.

This is the best advice that I've seen about this issue.

Anne, can you elaborate on these "cutouts" on the stock windshield? I have a Special Series that came with the short windshield, and am going to be replacing it with a taller one. Where are the cutouts on the stock windshield?

Thanks,

Pam

Hi Pam,
Those cut-outs are placed so as to be right over top of the corresponding holes in the lower corners of the bracket that the windshield is bolted to.

Vented windshield

Not to rain on the parade BUT---- I replaced the stocker with the BRP vented shield IT WORKS GREAT!!!

Less buffiting, AND I can direct the flow( YES i CAN). Most important for me is thefact that my helmet vents now functon much better than before.

I had replacet the windshield on my Valkyire and added a Goldwing vent. WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. The G/W vent is much cheaper but you had better be good with a jig saw ( new blade) or be prepared to purchase a new windshield.

BTW::::: The curvature of the vent and the windscreen are different. THe BRP vented shield looks much better then the GW add on.

Hot, sweaty helmets cause::::

OK, so is this designed so that you can knock it out and install a vent? I wish I had a stock windshield so I could see what you're referring to.

Thanks,

Pam

:agree: On all counts.

Pam, I was really surprised that the shorty on the SS doesn't have the cutouts. I got a shorty from a guy who was replacing his with an F4 windshield. I thought I might put the shorty on when I'm home riding in the Las Vegas heat but when I realized that it didn't have the cutouts I'm not sure that I will use it.

Like Bob said there are the two big brackets and at the bottom of them there is a oval hole, on the 14 and newer RT (except the SS) the shield is cutout to match the bracket. It was not cutout on older models.

PAM

Pam,

If your going to replace the wind shield anyway??? Go for the vented one--You won't be disappointed.

PS. I'll sell you my taller, stock shield if your interested???

In my mind, I'm visualizing the adjustable vent that I had on my Goldwing. I could move it into various positions, including closed if it was cold outside. Is this not the case with the Spyder vented windshield? Is it just a hole for the air to come through without the ability to adust or close it?

Thanks,

Pam

+100 on the vented windshield for me. It doesnt help with getting more air on you but it does help a lot with buffeting. It's always windy near the coast here in Socal and I noticed it right off ther bat.

My take:

Vented windshield #2

Hi Pam,

OK ----- the stock RT-s windshield I have ( not on the :spyder2:) HAS 2 holes to match the brackets. The vented wind shield I recently pruchased dosn't but the vent is adjustable ( just like the one on a GW) and just like the one on the GW, you can adjust the air flow, and you can feel it on your face woth an open shield. Maybe it's because I'm 4'6" tall and sit on the "tank" but that fresh flow of air makes all the difference. (Just kidding)
