That round ring thing with the cable looped thru it that's then zip-tied to the module is an after market Ferrite Choke that's been added/installed after the Spyder's left the factory by someone, probably after they'd experienced a few DESS issues, in an effort to try to stop any spurious signals over-riding & swamping the DESS signal between the antenna & the DESS Module; or maybe it was done in an effort to lessen the chances of the antenna itself being swamped by a stronger signal &/or to iron out any possible spikes in the signal..... : Doing this Ferrite Choke thing was one of the earlier BRP suggestions/attempts at fixing the DESS problem, altho it' since been revealed that doing this didn't seem to work too well &/or at all for many tho!!
It seems the only 'solutions' to the DESS stopping you starting your Spyder randomly that might be available atm are for you to replace the various Modules as & when they fail or as DESS problems become too much of a bother, but be aware that if you do that, you're only ever gonna be replacing the original dud items with exactly the same items that are still very likely going to experience this failure again/eventually; or you can see if you can find someone to Disable the DESS & then never worry about it again!

This is what I get in my service manual. Sorry for the sideways picture.
That was for 2013 and earlier. The DESS was changed in 2014.

Thanks for the info. Funny thing is, we bought this Spyder brand new. It had been back to the dealer a few times for some warranty work but none of it was ever for a DESS issue. We just recently had the DESS issue, that's why I changed the module to the latest part number.

Some DESS modules came equipped with Ferrite Chokes to lessen induced interference from electrical concerns into the system.
Realize that when DESS issues first appeared, the errors were initially scoffed at by dealers and the Mother Ship to the (we have never seen that before). Then as issues became more widespread, owners were told that Key Fobs from other vehicles (cars, trucks) nearby to the Spyder during start was causing the faults. Then overhead powerlines, cell phones, and no doubt Alien UFOs, Heart Pacemakers, you Apple Watch, Cousin Eddies metal plate and more.
After several variations of different “dash numbers” of the modules, the latest became the “916” which remains today with the 2022 models. However, the actions prescribed by the warranty department ranged from simple module changes, to antenna changes, and even complete replacement of the key switch, antenna, module, keys and reprogramming.
Ultimately though, and not able to be accomplished by dealers, for best reliability, having the DESS disabled is the best fix. However it does eliminate the anti theft feature of a correctly working DESS.
The consumer public will never know exactly how widespread DESS failures are. Only a small percentage of Spyder owners are on Spyderlovers. Similar to the failing front sprockets and NHTSA recall, dealers indicate the number of failed sprockets is very few. While the true number may never be known.
This is what I get in my service manual. Sorry for the sideways picture.
GearHd,
Way back when I had the DESS Module and the Switch (1st and 2nd time) replaced, the original keys worked, and they still do work.

Is this happening to anybody that also has the little "barcode store reward cards" attached to their keys. I have an Air Ambulance card on my key and was wondering if this causes it intermittently. I worked for an auto dealership and Chrysler stated that it could cause interference with their keys.

I know we never have anything on or near our keys.

On my spyder keys I do not have any cards or other keys on the key chain.
I use 1 key to start the bike, and the other key is in my pocket on a key chain. Anything that I have that has a magnetic strip ( on credit cards, or my cell phone I carry put in the trunk). I have a 2014 RTS-SE6, I know I posted the above info at the beginning of this thread. I also posted what the BRP person asked the dealership ( when the dealership opened up a case with BRP).

Got the dreaded DESS warning this past weekend on my 2014. At least I got stranded in my garage!
Spent today changing and relocating the module. Found enough wire in the harness to put it up by the coolant reservoir. Will be much easier to change in the future if needed.

I don't know if you got your idea from my post on this from 4 years ago, but I had no more problems after moving it ..... Mike

petew, What was the DESS module part number?
Thanks for posting the pictures.
What is your current spyder mileage?
At least you didn't get stranded on the road somewhere.

Module part # is 710004916 which I believe is the most current
Mileage is right around 2500 , I purchased the bike 3 years ago with only 500 miles on it .

petew,
The first time that I had the DESS error was on July 14th, 2015, and the DESS module replaced on July 17th, 2015 at that time the mileage was 6.994. They replaced the DESS module ( part number at the time was 710004190) that was under the Manufacturer warranty.
Then the 2nd time I had the DESS module and Switch replaced on Aug. 31,2015 at that time the current mileage was:8,740.
Yes,that is the current DESS Module part number.
OK.
I hope that you don't get the DESS error again!

Can someone please PM or email me the procedure for replacing the Dess module? My 2019 RTL Dess failed after having battery issues. I will be ordering 710004916 asap and want to try doing this myself. Post replacement, does it need to learn the keys? Is there a procedure for that?
If by email , PM me for my email address
thanks very much

You haven't finished up with your thread about key error and starting issues. Did you do the load test on the new battery? Have you tried jump starting the Spyder from your car battery? You very well could be making a premature conclusion about the DESS module being bad. You need to make absolutely sure your battery is in top condition first. I don't believe there has been any other confirmed report on the forum about battery issues causing a DESS to be damaged.

Read what IMS posted ...... I have pics in one of my Albums ..... the module is located behind the trunk wall just above the Battery ..... so frunk has to be removed ..... the main issue with doing this is re-attaching the rubber AIR snorkel to the Air Box.... I wouldn't even bother with it, not having it actually helps the throttle bodies breath ..... Mike

Does anyone have a wire diagram of the DESS module? I have a theory I want to test out on my 2014 and it would save a ton of time if I knew what wires went to what. Thanks!

Are you referring to the external wiring connections, or the internal wiring of the module. There are only 5 wire connections to the DESS. Two are for the antenna at the ignition, one is power in, and two connect to the ECM. Internally it is a special limited purpose computer processor so there won't be any way in H*** anyone is going to be able to give diagrams of the internals.
BTW, I see you are new here.
If you have intentions of doing your own service work on your Spyder you would be well served to get a service manual for about $25 to $30 from www.canammanuals.com. It has a wiring diagram in it.
Also, for something like this you would do better to start a new thread. This one is years old and many members won't bother to look at it so you'll miss out on getting answers.
