I have had the error probably no less than 25-30 in the past year (my first time was the first sunday after Easter 2015) I remember that day, because I was going to drive the bike to church that morning, but after it wouldn't crank, I drove my mustang instead. On the way out I ran over one of the ferrel kittens that I was adopting (but that is another sad story). When I got home, I read on this site (somewhere) that the key was to discharge the system. This was done by disconnecting the hot cable and touching the negative post on the battery. After connecting everything backup, I was good. As I stated, I have had the situation to happen about 25-30 more times, but never had to discharge the system again, simply flip the key and possibly wait 10 minutes in my worst case. Now I just keep the tools on the bike to disconnect the battery, and also keep both keys if going further than 200 miles from home.
BTW, my first time happened at about 7k miles, now I have almost 14k miles on my 2014 RT SM6.

THANK YOU for your input...Hope you have better luck than me getting this problem fixed...

Saw this at bike week. Front wheel conversion on a Goldwing. If this persists, may give them a real jump start. Looked good and reasonable price.

No switch replace, just the module. I brought in the part number to the service department and low and behold they had it on the shelf.

Default Suggestion -- From Another Thread

All .... there is another thread with similar subject matter (can't find it right now). In that thread was the following suggestion -- which works well for many other brands (Indian and HD are the two I know of) -- apologies if this suggestion I already in this thread.

Suggestion: Reprogram the ECM to accept a PIN (actually two, a factory and a user assigned). This works well for bikes that have a FOB (which is what our key is when you get right down to it) in the case where the FOB is lost or stops functioning. User simply enters one of the PINs and the bike will then start. The beauty of this suggestion is the bike is still secure and such a programming change can be done IN THE FIELD!

Again, sorry if this is a duplicate and also for not giving credit to the other party that made the suggestion in the other thread.

Note that I am not affected by this as my RT is 2012 .... but have read much of this thread and sense the level of frustration increasing with the length of the thread.

FOUND IT -- See post number 187 here: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...S-issues/page8

Best of luck to all those affected by this -- hoping BRP takes the problem seriously .... Ann

Was referring to reliability, not appearances. Myself I rather have an ugly bike thats reliable, and gets me home, than a piece of eye candy that seems to be racked with problems, from a company that does'nt seem to care.

You may wish to re-think your comment after looking at this one.

To bad the new front wheels and brakes won't fix this problem. I hate to scare anyone, but nothing with a motor and wheels is completely trouble free!

Honda Issues Recall on 126,000 Gold Wings

Here’s a chronology issued by Honda of the problems with the Gold Wing’s back brakes:
    December 2, 2011 Honda issued recall 11V-567.
April 5, 2012 Honda received a claim of the rear brake dragging after the recall repair and began investigation.
June 12, 2012 The reoccurrence claim was believed to be a result of contamination, possibly due to improperly flushed brake fluid, and an investigation was started for the contaminated brake fluid.
July-Sept. 2012 Precipitate within the brake fluid was confirmed and analyzed.
February 2013 Honda sent motorcycle dealers a reminder on how to properly perform the recall repair.
May-October 2013 Honda received four claims involving rear brake fires occurring after
    recall repair.

October 19, 2013 AHM submitted an updated analysis proposal to Honda in Japan.
February 2014 Analysis found that no contaminants were present in the brake fluid of vehicles with alleged fires and analysis into other components continued.
July 24, 2014 Honda determined that a safety defect exists and decided to conduct a safety recall in North America. Root cause has not been determined at this time and analysis and investigation is ongoing.

But the key phrase here is "investigation is on going" Honda is 1. Admitting there is a problem, 2. Investigating the problem and 3. Will follow thru with a fix. BRP is doing what???

I'm with you Sam. And that's the real problem is'nt it. Not that the roadster has a few problems, hell everything man made has problems from time to time. But it's the fact that BRP has its head in the sand, won't deal with them, won't say anything, that's what infuriating Does not give one much faith in the company. Just don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling. Where is the customer support? And with that I'll shut up. Cause we are just repeating the same thing over and over.

Why would we expect it to start even when we the legal owners with the as delivered key be surprised that the factory DESS system won't let us start it? Why would we expect that the manufacture of the vehicle would acknowledge that they have a design problem? The problem is that we are willing to continue to accept this from BRP. BOHICA, that stands for bend over here it comes again. For what ever it's worth if you people are willing to continue to take this be my guest, I bought my 2014 RTL simply to be able to ride and enjoy, with the fear of it not starting do to this DESS crap at any time I feel that the manufacture (BRP) has sold a product that is defective. That said if BRP was willing acknowledge the problem and to satisfactorily deal with the problem I would be willing to go along with them. This does not seem to be the case. Now I could go the legal route but rather than that my solution is to just sell my RTL to someone else and let them deal with the potential problems.

When it's all said and done all I want is something that when I turn the key it starts and I get to enjoy the ride. Plenty of options beyond BRP.

I just wish I had joined this forum before buying my RTL, if I had I would never have been a BRP owner. OK rant over and I'm done.
Ya just got to get the last word in , don't ya!

Default It's Still A Trike Conversion

With ALL the hassle of dealing with a 2 warranty product. I know this ALL TO WELL. Having had both a '02GL1800 converted to a Champion Solid Axle Trike in '06, and having traded that plus sell my '01 H-D and Wells Cargo Cycle Wagon in on an '09GL1800 Level 2 Hannigan Trike(IRS). Both of these were NOT locally built. However, I was lucky that my local Honda Dealer started to build both these conversions AFTER I bought mine, so I had a trike friendly service facility near by. There's a reason that the conversions only come with a 2-3 year warranty. (It really sucks when you have a 4 month winter layup)The components just do not have the longevity of the GL1800. There will be parts that either fail or wear out. Part of the issue is that the conversions are made by humans and are put together by humans, and the conversions are done by humans as compared to the robotics used in the build of the GL1800. Plus there's the issue of QC. All one has to do is get on any of the trike forums and see how littered they are with the problems from owners of all trike manufacturers. Suffice it to say I had multiple time consuming and expensive issues with both my trike conversionsthat kept me from riding.
For medical reasons, in order to keep riding, I had to evolve to a RT Limited. Has it been perfect-NO. The delivery experience was totally disastorous and unprofessional. Salesman who I worked with over the phone for six months went MIA the day of my delivery. Had a conflict with leading a lunch ride. Bike was not ready when promised. Had a 4 hour wait. Did BRP contact me about my completely unacceptable survey-YES. Did they followup with me-NO. Did "heads roll" at that dealership-NO. Luckily after a couple of minor glitches, the Spyder has been 100% reliable. Do I like that I have to go 55 miles for service-NO; but the dealer seems solid and reasonably priced. I like that I have my Spyder completely warrantied for 5 years. Could BRP do better in a lot of areas for their US customer-You bet. Having had 3-H-Ds('96-09)H-D ain't perfect either. NEVER had a keep me off the road problem with the GL1800 parts of my trikes. Had a frame weld isse on my '02. and a brake issue on my '09; but it didn't apply to trikes. Looks like they have some unresolved brake issues with Gen 1&2 of the GL1800. Don't know if the've been resolved, or if they still exist in Gen3.
Lastly, the GL1800 trikes are big and heavy. Besides clutching and front braking, this was one of the reasons I bought my RTL. I can't imagine that the GL1800 or Neowing is as svelt as a Spyder. Is a semi auto/full auto tranny available??

Well, I will be taking my 2014 RT in for the warranty work on Saturday morning. I have become used to the error now, and know what to do. I just hope the fix doesn't make it worse. I will keep you all posted.

Triangle Cycles in Durham, NC. They have been very good about getting my work done, even though I didn't buy the bike from them. I had it in for my 12k mile service and asked them about the D.E.S.S. issue. He said that after the oil change he would send the information in. After he finished, and before I could go, he said that BRP had ok'ed the replacement and he would order the parts. The parts came in after a week, but I have been unavailable for the past month. Finally got an appointment for this Saturday.

They were helpful getting the BEST warranty transferred to me when I bought it. Very good friend has a brother that used to work for triangle in Danville, not sure if he is still there but I'll check into it.

Edit: Deanna sorry for taking your thread off track.
