Default Built a trailer... got a hitch....

Well, I finally decided I wanted a trailer for some of my longer trips--- so I built one over the last week.

Started out with this trailer kit from Harbor Freight:

    http://www.harborfreight.com/1090-lb...res-90153.html

Signed up for their 'inside track' club for $30--- got an instant $10 gift card. Inside track members get special deals and whatnot. I asked them if it would save me anything on my trailer-- they got the manager and he was able to pull up that they had the trailer on a 'inside track' deal like 6 months ago--- so he said he can give me the same deal-- $100 off. Trailer cost--- $150.

Problem ---- red trailer frame. So I decided to sand it down and paint it. Used truck-bed liner spray-paint for a rough matte finish that hopefully will hold up. Found out my dumpster at work makes a great paint bench...

    Bought a X-Cargo Car-Top carrier on sale for $199:

    http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...2020000P?mv=rr

While the trailer came with a full light kit, I wanted LED's ------ Found a good kit for the rear at local farm store for $40 and then got 2 side LED lights for $10 each too.

Went with the Canadian hitch guy that's on ebay-- seems well built - hooks on swing-arm-- has 2 side plates that mount and then a removable (4 bolts) hitch. Pretty nice setup. Only problem was the hole for the wiring harness is a small round one-- no good way to mount a flat 4 and make it look good --- so I found a round-4 kit that mounts great and works well.

Wired the whole trailer-- wrapped all the wires in black wire loom.

Bought a Spare and tire hanger and found a good way to mount it up underneath where it can't be seen.

So with everything to do the trailer I'm at about $450 ---- not too bad at all!

Here's a bunch of pics of how it all went and turned out--- I'm really happy with the final look of it all.

Looks pretty cool. Great job. Are you thinking about adding some silver to it at some point?

Very nice looking job. It seems to have a decent size tire, which I consider very important to trouble free towing. What size are they? Have you had a chance to tow it yet? Very nice!

I knew I'd get razzed for shopping at Harbor Freight.... gotta buy with caution at that place--- some stuff isn't so bad... but much of it is junk.....I won't by any power tools there-- but have bought some other tools, tapes, fuses, etc.....

The wheels are 12". Only thing I don't like is the white rims.

Tires call for 60 PSI which seems really really firm-- so I backed off to 50 PSI -- but they still feel darn firm-- thinking of lowering them a bit considering the load won't ever be very heavy. Seems to tow well - although empty I can hear it hitting the bumps.

And yes-- I can carry a multitude of helmets now.....

With a touch of silver it'd match up to your RS like they were meant for each other...

Where did you get the hitch on ebay and do you have to have your rear fender off to use it. I'm looking at doing my first long trip on the spyder and a small trailer would be a good idea.

    Thanks

Don't want to do silver just yet as there's a color change in my future.......

No -- you don't have to remove the rear fender---- I've just had mine off for awhile now...

Ebay hitch : jsut do a search for spyder hitch and you'll find one for the RT and one for the RS.

I have looked at this again, and I am thinking I may want to copy your design for a trailer. I didn't want to invest in the 622 and I don't use a trailer often, but this would be very handy to have around and the cost is certainly good!

Thanks for posting Dan. Hope I won't owe you any royalty fees or anything...

Please tell everyone how you wired it up ? Does your trailer have a 4 pin ? I thought about one of those hitches but then I would have been lost on the wireing. Thanks Rick

Do trailers in your state have to be licensed?
