There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Zumo 665 - What's Needed to Install to a 2012 RT SE5

Thanks Dave!! When you say the volume is low, how are you listening to it? Bluetooth to helmet or open air listening direct from garmin or the BRP audio system?

I rarely use the bluetooth except for the phone, never even tried it for music, as I don't have a BT helmet. I always just share my tunes with the world around me, so open air from the RTs Audio system.

660 versus 665 Harness

The info I have found is that the 660 original harness is now replaced by the 665 harness, it is backwards compatible with the 660. Garmin apparently sent out some old stock 660 harnesses in the past, but has stopped and the supply chain now has the 665 harness. Don't know why they would keep the same part #.

Finally had enough time to install the Zumo 665 on my RTS SE5. The resources here made the task much easier to do. This was my first time removing the tupperware. I did end up removing more than I needed to do the dash top install, however it was a learning experience.

I was unsure how the dash would separate, I ended up using a plastic (to prevent marring) putty knife to slowly work it apart. I used a 2 bolt Ram diamond mount, some black 5 mm x 20 mm bolts with fender washers and nylock nuts for the dash mount. I ran the Zumo harness between the 2 dash pieces and out the front right side, there was a relief for existing wiring there. Fed the harness out from the back of the lights ( did not remove the headlight - used a long zip tie to fish things thru). I ran the the harness as shown in Ken Miller's videos. My 2012 RTS had zip tie locations molded in already, so I did not have to drill the 2 holes for them.

It all went back together nicely, no extra bolts afterwards!

I have not settled on a location for the XM antenna yet, currently under the frunk area. I ordered some items from GPS City that will be here this week that will let me try some other options.

Thanks.

So for those that have installed a 665 in place of the 660 - is it safe to assume that there is an additional wire that runs back for the XM antenna and this is not part of the harness that is already on the RT's?

No, there is no additional wire/cable. Just a different antenna wire/cable. The 660 antenna wire/cable is for Garmin Traffic. The 665 antenna wire/cable is for XM. They look the same but are internally wired differently. Lamont and I figured that out the hard way.

How is it working there? I currently have mine right on the dash, plan on switching it weekly. I would rather have it under the tupperware out of site.

BRP has its XM antenna in the trunk, does anyone have it there and how is the reception? Of course the hockey puck antenna i believe is different than the brp antenna and doesn't fit in the same area.(according to me tech)

Looking for different places to test it out for now.:dontknow:

The 665 antenna is bigger than the BRP XM antenna because its two antennas in one. The XM music and XM Traffic antenna.

I now have the BRP XM radio and I don't have a problem with reception. However, the 665 antenna won't fit in the same place as the BRP antenna. I switched back to the 660 because my passenger could not control the channels or volume. Which was the right decision now that I have the Bluetooth adapter. Many riders here that have the 665 can give you advice on the best placement of the 665 antenna. However, there is a Garmin bulletin that states the antenna should be mounted at least a foot away from the GPS device.

Ours is mounted to the upper right hand side wind deflector behind the shield

Seems to work pretty well in this location, its out of the way & I have no worries of someone trying to steal it.

We just used the 3M double sided tape that was premounted on the antenna disc

What did you use to attach the antenna to the wind deflector? I tried some heavy duty velcro with its own adhesive and the foam on the bottom of the antenna would not stick to the velcro.

Nothing special, just unpeeled the tape backing off the antenna & directly mounted it to the deflector. Figure if I ever need to move or replace it, the deflector is less than $30 to replace, so not that big of a deal & it works well in this location for us

I will need to take a closer look at the bottom of my antenna. It has a foam pad on the bottom, perhaps it is removable. I could then attach it to same spot that you have. Thanks!

Ours was the same on the Zumo 665 XM antenna disc

Ours came with the white 3M foam pad on the bottom of the XM antenna disc, and I just peeled off the paper from the bottom of the pad and stuck it on the deflector (after properly cleaning it of course) over a year ago & it hasn't moved one bit.
