• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Zumo 590 discontinued

I’m with CavMan, in that my Zumo550 is still working fine and I will continue to use it until Garmin stops supporting it.

Dont underestimate the glove love friendly design. The BRP connect gets around this by using the joystick but you will have to take your eyes off the road to adjust anything. I liken this to my old Sanyo candy bar phone. The large buttons allowed my to navigate thru the address book without looking at the phone so I could safely place a call. Can’t do that on the new phone unless you have voice recognition turned on, then it’s a fifty/fifty chance of getting the right number.

Virtual buttons and complex menus are not a good thing.

Thank you very much for all the info you have provided.

I'm off to try it on my Zumo 660 that is at least 6 yrs old.

Here is a good link to learning how to use Garmin BaseCamp which is not a very user friendly program IMO.
http://www.newenglandriders.org/GPS/Learn_BaseCamp_PC.pdf

One of the things I tried on a long return trip home from out west last fall was to create waypoints in BaseCamp at each intersection en route from point A to point B, including A and B as waypoints. I then created the route by just inserting the waypoints in order and the route worked perfectly when uploaded to my 590.

Thanks for posting the link to that document. I used to have a copy but lost it and couldn't remember where it had come from. I used that to wean myself off Google Maps and onto Basecamp.

I don't understand why Garmin don't invest a bit in Basecamp, it would be so easy to improve. If I had more time available I'd offer to do it for them for free just to get something decent.
