I know it’s winter down under, so you’ve just had Christmas, but it should start to get warmer soon, ready for bunny breeding season.

...

Funnily enough, we did just do a full on, sit down, Christmas in July function with all the traditional stuff and then some for 20 or so people a couple of weeks ago.

The Child Bride, who was an Award Winning Chef in a previous life, has made doing this a bit of an annual event ever since we came back to South Oz almost 30 years ago, after I hadta retire hurt and start doing slightly less strenuous/dangerous things a little closer to all the necessary medics. And it doesn't hurt that one of our Daughters is a formally trained Pâtissier who loves to chip in, either! It's truly astounding that I'm only a little bit overweight!

Nowdays, almost everyone who knows about them vie for an invite to any of the Child Bride's dinners, but especially to one of her Christmas in July events - we're often booked a couple of years in advance for them, and we've even put on an extra 'special one' for a bunch of Executive Chefs from some of the big name, top line, swanky restaurants over in the Eastern States, who I'm pretty sure came over just to eat all the dessert! They've done that more than once!!

And yes, she has been known to cook up some fantastic rabbit dishes, but won't even consider doing that at all now, not since she's seen how manky all the local critters look! But don't be fooled, there is NO 'rabbit breeding season' here, cos here in Oz, the bloody rabbits breed ALL YEAR ROUND!! Once pregnant, the does generally take about 28-35 days to produce a litter of up to 14 or so kits; the kits then only take about 7-8 weeks to become fully independent and leave their mothers, who can then pretty much immediately start breeding up their next litter; with the females in the last lot becoming sexually mature/reaching breeding age at about 10-12 weeks, even tho they don't reach full size/maturity until they're about 18 months old! So just as long as there's enough feed and a fertile adult male rabbit around, they can breed like... well, rabbits - only that's a lot faster than most think, and in a good season (like the seasons we've had a few of lately, and look like having a few more of, as soon as this Winter is over), their numbers can increase exponentially!

And tonight, with the temp already at 3°C and falling, about a -10° wind chill, and right now, not a cloud in the sky, the frost is already settling in, HARD!

Like I said, having been to Darwin, Cairns and Brisbane in the summer time I’ve always thought of Australia as, well, tropical. Even Brisbane in the winter was just a bit wet but not unduly cold.

I never thought of Oz having a winter per se, but I forget, just like the US, the place is so damn huge and the further south you go the colder it gets in winter. I’ve never strayed south to be honest.

I live in the mountains and high deserts of the US west and it no doubt being higher than just about anywhere in Oz, I get the two extremes of climate too. We don’t really get much spring or fall, it just switches between winter and summer and summer and winter with just a few weeks in between.

Does your wife do good vegetarian dishes? My wife cooks Asian style dishes and curries for me based on tofu. She’s not from Asia but has learned to cook Thai and Vietnamese very well. I’m well fed, overly so according to my doctor. Me I don’t cook. I’m known as the “Mad Hackney Poisoner.” I’m banned from the kitchen. Even the cats look nervous when I feed them.

Rabbit populations we don’t have to worry about apart from the odd one or two. The mountain lions, the coyotes, the Trash Pandas (Raccoons) and many other critters would keep them at bay. There’s also not a lot to eat on the salt desert floor and the mountains aren’t that conducive to burrowing. Depending upon the season the deer can be a bit of a nuisance, especially on the roads from dusk until dawn.

Moose and bears can be rare problems if hiking in the back country but nothing that breeds with the frequency of rabbits. Skunks are another issue entirely if you are particularly sensitive to their aroma. There’s no ocean for a thousand clicks so sharks aren’t a threat. It’s six hundred clicks to the nearest other metro area to be honest, with a lot of nothing in between. It’s a two day drive at my age to get to the beach.

It's a beautiful, cloudless morning here in Anacortes. Currently, 60 degrees, humidity at 76%, 6 MPH breeze. High today will be 72 and the overnight low will get down to 55. Yesterday I did my annual trip to my favorite place in the world, Roche Harbor Resort. This was my "home location" where I got my mail during summers for many years. I met some good yacht club friends and sat on the aft boat deck cracking fresh dungeness crab. Delicious!!!!! Had a good lunch at the restaurant and very reluctantly took the ferry back to Anacortes last evening. I miss that part of my life a lot. But I do feel fortunate to have had many, many years of experiencing it. It's now been over 11 years since I sold my boat (which was my home). Getting on and off my friend's boat showed my lack of mobility/stability that caused me to move on from boating life. Stay safe..... Jim
