• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. You never know what a day will bring

Today started pretty much like every other day. Had nothing planned other than the usual grind and then my wife came in the office and everything changed. My son Alex has been training for a job in the Air Force and the plan was for him to ship out some time in the middle of January. Well the recruiter called and one of the guys dropped out and if he could get to his office in Johnson City before noon he could ship out today. :yikes:

None of us was ready for that and it kind of suxs that it was just before Thanksgiving and we thought we would be spending Christmas with him too. Bottom line is he really wants this job (combat controller) and if he can pass the schools there is a 17K bonus waiting for him. I guess they have a 95% drop rate but so far he has passed all their test. Part of me wanted to ask him to wait but I know this is really important to him.

We get him there on time and said our goodbyes. It was really tuff to see him go as we now have three boys serving our country and we have a empty home. His two brothers are in the Marine Corp and Alex is now in the Air Force. I'm proud of them all but in a selfish way I wish they were home with us.

This is really hard on my wife as she can't stop crying. If you think about it say a little prayer for Alex and maybe my wife Chris too. Thanks

Here's a little secret, I say my prayers every night. Always have & always will.

god bless you guys and your 3 boys.

God Bless

All the best it is tough being parents for sure, tell him a big THANKS from us for protecting us all. We will keep you and your wife and your son in our prayers

I too have three boys and know what an empty house feels like. You are doing the right thing by not asking him to hold back, although I know how much you want to sometimes. They do have to leave the nest and fly... It's just hard being the ones left behind. I will keep you all in my prayers... please keep us in yours as well.

THAT'S GREAT!

I bet you are so proud of him!!

It is so nice to see young people giving of themselves to keep the rest of us free and safe!

May the good Lord keep him safe, and watch over him until he returns to you.

WAY TO GO!!! :2thumbs:

I'm happy for Alex. He's a great kid and I was glad that I got to talk with him for a while when we were at your BBQ. He seemed like he had a good idea of what he wanted in life and had started out on a good path to reach his goals. I'm praying for God's comfort to you and Chris and for His protection and guidance for Alex.

Gotta love the military regardless of what branch it is...it's always a guessing game as to when things will really occur. Prayers and gratitude to your family.
And get Skype....you can stay connected ANYWHERE with that thing!

Prayers that all your sons come home safely. Alex leaving right before the holidays is tough on you and your wife. Sounds like he's eager to get his career going. I hope he does well on his chosen career path. And exciting time for him!

I know its tough sending your child off to war (mine is in the Navy) but it also shows what a good job we did as parents ! to instill the values and character that makes this country what it is :2thumbs: I hope all your sons return to enjoy the freedoms they are fighting for

Congratulations to Alex, though that does suck that he won't be around for the holidays. I'll keep him in my thoughts that he will return safely and spend many other holidays with you to come.

Talk about a mixed bag of emotions

You know you raised them right when they choose the military over other less desirable options. Both my kids and their spouses are Air Force although I miss having them and my Grandchildren around I am so proud of them it makes up for it. When my daughter the oldest decided to join after High School I attempted to talk her out of it. I had just retired from 23 years in the Army a few months earlier and she told me "Dad I have been moving all my life and it is obvious you are not moving again and it is time for a move" I could tell she had put a lot of thought into her response and you can not fault them for wanting to follow your footsteps.

Another member of one of my other boards explained his job.

Let me explain to all what a "Combat Controller" does:

By definition, they are ground combat forces. They are assigned to Special Tactics Squadrons within the USAF Special Operations Command (AFSOC).

Their job is to get into combat and non-permissive environments by whatever means are available, establish assault zones, provide air traffic control, fire support, command and control communications, and whatever airmanship skills are required to rapidly establish and control the air-ground interface. They also help control special operations attacks and remove obstacles through demolition, and conduct terminal attack control operations. Terminal attack control translates to having the authority to control the maneuver of and grant weapons release clearance to attacking aircraft, known in the past as ground forward air control (FAC).

They can get to work in any manner — jumping, diving, walking, vehicle, boat or submarine ... When they get to work, their job is to talk on the radio and make things happen ... There an air-to-ground interface, a conduit of information that ties the ground to the air operationally.

All the power to him...Now I know why the drop out rate is sooooo high...

My prayers are with you and your family

It's so hard to let your kids go. I know the feeling. Had to let my daughter go, she joined the service, and now is no longer with us. She will always be in our hearts and prayers.

My Nephew joined the marines. Just returned from Iraq and is now getting ready to go to Africa.

Safe return for your boys
