Yet another heating issue

Following Doc on the way home the other day my :spyder2: overheated and broke down. Ambient temp was about 105 if I remember correctly and was running about 7 bars. When I went to pass a car the bike started stuttering and hot fluid shot onto my right foot. Limp mode and all that good/bad stuff and of course the embarasment after the pass of the person then passing me.... Anyways, pretty sure my thermostat housing blew out AGAIN as the symptoms and deluge of coolant everywhere in the back end was exactly the same as the first time.

So, question here is, any chance there is another type of thermostat or even a overflow tank on the market?

So far I have had 2 coolant tanks replaced, 2 thermostat housings now and a connector (part where all the coolant hoses connect blew out). I don't think BRP took into consideration or did any real testing on some of the cheap crappy parts they use in the hotter climates.

Did they replace your pressure cap? A faulty cap which allows the system to go overpressure can cause such failures.

Not yet, but I will mention it. I had it towed to my house and it will be a few days before it can be towed to the shop.
The cap was not replaced on the last events.

Yes I agree they built these to run in cold weather and not 100+ weather. Right now we have to pay for their inability to think these thing through. Mine is in the shop right now to have a fan motor put on that should be warranty to help this problem but having to pay to have it installed and pay for the part. Not particularly a happy camper right now, but can't drive this thing in hot weather and have it over heat, and in the Houston area we always run into some sort of traffic which causes you to be stuck in none moving traffic. Praying that this fix will solve the problem they missed.

Has anyone in your "hot climates" tried Water Wetter? I am using it in mine since stock. We had a few 95F+ days here around Chicago and mine was fine sitting in rush hour traffic for 50 minutes.
I never saw even 3 bars from the top. I added it back in Nov when I took delivery of mine, mainly from reading these posts.

When you say over pressure what exactly do you mean?

The radiator is under pressure, Water broils at 212f but under pressure it raises the boiling point, The Spyders radiator cap is set at 13 PSI If it's not working and doesn't release some pressure after 13 PSI The tank and or hoses can burst.

I'd say your blow-outs are a result of another problem possibilities would be

1. Faulty radiator cap (as stated earlier)

2. Bad radiator with flow issues either restricted or plugged passages making part of radiator useless.

3. Defective water pump causing cavitaion/or aeration of coolant.

4. Air leak somewhere in system possibly even water pump shaft seal.

Your part failures are due to a improperly performing cooling system this is my opinion..

When I took a job in Palm Springs last year I was told by some of the :spyder2:riders there about a replacement fan designed for the hot weather. Since my work contract just had me there until April I did not really look into it although I did speak to Carlo about it. He said that it would be addressed on an individual basis. I did not have an overheating problem but the feet and seat got really warm on hot days. Now back in Minnesota but will be back in the heat down south soon. Please post as to the fix and recommendations. My daughter boyfriend in the LA area also has a 08 GS and temps there are in the 100's every afternoon on his ride home. He is looking at the fan-can to hopefully improve his ride comfort and also keep the engine temps lower.

I have had it in mine for about a year now[Arizona] but I can't recommend it as I can't say I've noticed any difference.

Hey Jedd,
It's the connector again. I just took it into the shop today and had to trailer it in. I thought I could ride it in baby style, but when I put almost a gallon of water into the overflow tank, it ALL came out...which was fine since I was then able to pinpoint the problem area. The shop will be doing a complete test on it after the parts come in and with BRP it will take at least a week as they don't express parts out to the dealerships.

At least the timing is good, been too hot and too rainly to ride here anyways.

Combination of water wetter and fan with larger shroud did the trick for my spyder in 100+ weather in Vegas. It was done at same time after my spyder overheated from just standing in traffic so I can not tell which helped more but did not overheat afterward. New fan is done on brp per recommendation of dealer.

Help! New owner of a 2010 RS-S here.How do you go about getting a new fan even if brp doesn't recommend one to you. If I want to put a new fan on because I think it might work more efficient. Can I put one on?Just ordered the water wetter. The engine heat on my right leg and foot is uncomfortable. My husband and son says that's the difference between scooter and motorcycle.I had tried out an 09 which had lots of heat on right foot/leg.Mine seems to be the same. I'd like to find out if a new fan would help.

Get SpyderPops Missing Heat Shield and Air Management System.

:welcome: The Watter Wetter and a different fan would only help if the Spyder was overheating. The fan would probably make the heat on your right foot worse. The SpyderPops products are your best bet.
