Y Gaskets...Looking for hints and tips for install.

Well, ready for an oil change and I've got some signs that my Y gaskets are going bad.

I picked up some of the GL 1800 Y gaskets a while back just to be ready.

Anyone that has done these? What are the gotchas? What is the easiest way to change these out. I have the monokey GIVI racks, so taking off those rear side panels is not going to happen. I'm hoping with the Spyder up in the air for my oil change I can loosen them up and slip them off.

Do I need to loosen the stock muffler? Is there are gasket in play there too?

There's a rubber connector that holds the Y pipe to the frame-- easy to slide over so the Y pipe isn't connected. Us a good spring puller (I used an old T- handle hex wrench that I bent) to pull each spring down. Loosen the clamp on each side. Slide the system down-- swap gaskets.

I have the Hindle and did not have to remove it--- it just pivoted when I pulled down on the Y pipe.

This really was MUCH easier than I expected it to be.. once you get into it you'll be fine.

I found it to be a tough go. I have the Hinde and had to disconect it. The Honda gaskets are a tight fit and a bit of a pain in the Donkey to get the two exhausts pipes to line up.
Very doable and a extra set of hands would help. Took about 1 hour.

 Easy job even a Caveman can do it!
Like Firefly says, No muffler removal required. The only possible gotcha is don't drop the pipes down too far, you don't want to yank out the oxygen sensor wire.

Ok... So I don't have to worry about that gasket between the stock muffler and the y pipe manifold.... I think I will order one anyway... just in case.

Unless you're separating the stock exhaust from the Y-pipe, there shouldn't be a need to mess with that gasket. Easy to feel around and check for leaks.

Put the new & pipe Gaskets on the lower (male) pipes and then push the whole setup up into the uppers...... easy stuff.

Literally took me 1/2 hour to do it. I can't believe BRP charges 2 hours labor for this!

Here is something I just thought of for all us Hindle owners with exhaust leak, I know that some has cut 4 slots in the end to stop the leak but what about getting the pipe at the end opened up a bit (extrude) so a gasket will fit then when it is clamped down that should stop all leaks. What you all thing of this?

Still have to cut the slots.

Mine doesn't seem to leak-- or if it is it's so small I don't notice it---- so I really don't much care. The Y-pipe Gaskets leaking is a bigger issue IMO....

Indeed as they are upstream from the 02 sensor. They cause more issues in the way the bike is running.

I may have a hindle soon... We'll see.

What are the signs? Maybe I should replace mine?

Getting a lot more heat than usual on my right foot and getting some "popping" sounds that I didn't have before when I let off the gas.

I'm at 6200 miles... so that seems to be the magical average mileage that the right side gasket goes bad.

:(
Starting to sound like it , Mine started to leak at about 8000 miles.
At 11000 miles it Finley gave up the ghost. Right side was totally fried. :yikes:

Thanks for posting this information. I had a feeling my gaskets were either going, or gone, and this is confirming it. I too have started to smell fuel lately which I haven't ever done before. I have just over 9500 miles on mine. I will call the nearest Honda dealer now, and hopefully they will have the gaskets in stock.

Highly doubt they'll have them in stock. They'll have to order them and you should be able to get them in a few days.

Might be quicker to order online.....

You were right, but it was already too late. :D I gave them my information and they will order on Monday, and should be in on Wednesday. $13 and some change for 4 of them.

It would be nice if there was a "How To?" with pictures and stuff so many more people could feel confident in doing it themselves and save the $$ by not paying the dealers labor!

Give me a little time and I will post details, and pictures, of the process when I install mine.

Taking pictures now... Changing oil tonight so I took off all the panels I need to to also do the gaskets.

This is easier than I thought as you can easily get to the y gaskets and clamps by just removing the bottom "kick" panels.

Should be attacking the gaskets tomorrow at some point...

Total list:

-Oil change
-Reprops air dam
-Y Gaskets
-New plugs - For giggles as I had to use anti-seize on the last set I changed at Forest's. I need to do the right with the heat sink compound.
-Re-tourque drive pully to spec per service bulletin. Belt is still at original tension... Going to let dealer do that next time I'm in which will probably coincide with my new rear tire.

But I digress.

Thanks everyone for the pointers. It is always easier once you take the panels off and eye ball it.
