XM radio, and their antennas...

Hi Guys!
The MIssus must have forgotten some of my mis-deeds this past year; She bought an XM Onyx EZ for me to use in my truck, and in the Spyder.:yes:
I've got it working in the truck pretty well; that magnetic mount antenna is giving me some reason for concern...
What do we do for antennas, when there's nothing metal to attach them to? Does Sirius/XM have an alternative that'll work better? I've aleady got it figured out how I'm mounting it: In the top trunk, where I've got a 12 volt power source, and access to the connections to allow me to use an MP-3 player plug-in directly into the system.
It's the antenna that has me puzzled...:shocked:
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I used double sided 3M tape and stuck the antenna on top of the rear trunk door works great. Bought the extra and mount for the onyx and antenna on ebay. Switching from truck to Spyder about a 3 minute job, very easy.

Agree with this. I bought an extra car kit so the wires can be run under the body panels for a clean look. All you need to do then is pop out the radio from the truck mount and pop it into the bike mount. The wires stay attached to the mount, no muss no fuss!

without trying to put everyone to sleep, I designed something called a wave guide for focusing the sat signal on to the sat antenna.
works great.

Another option, if you can remove some panels to gain access to the back of the desired location, is to glue a large washer or metal plate to the back of the panel. Your magnetic antenna will then magically adhere to the "plastic".

I may be wrong but it would seem to me that you could just use the double sided tape to stick a flat piece of metal to the trunk and then use the original magnetic mount on the Spyder.

As reluctant as I am to do this :shocked:; would it just be better to glue a metal disc down to the top trunk, and stick the antenna to it? Something in the recesses of my feeble mind is pulling at my pant leg, and saying something about having some metal under the antenna being important... :shocked:

There is not enough metal there to serve as a ground plane...even if it were properly grounded to the Spyder frame. Mount the antenna whatever way suits you best and don't try to out-think it.

mine works just fine up on the top just inside the top trunk lid lip with a velcro strip held in place. plus out of sight out of mind of curious people. tucked antenna wire down inside trunk lid hinge area

XM antenna

I too am putting a xm radio on LI'LL Red I thought about just supper gluing it on top of rear trunk it's going to be there until I wear out spyder anyway ?

here is a pic of what I Did. Just used Electrical tape over antenna wire to protect it from trunk door. I May drill a hole later and route antenna thru trunk wall but not sure. I use velcro on both antenna and receiver to hold them in place on
