Works Shocks Question

For those of you who have purchased shocks from them, how long did it take to get them?

I ordered them mid-March, and they are not here, and are not ready to ship?

Their Rep, Tom, was always courteous, and reasonably quick to respond, but I was told the needed custom parts arrived a couple of weeks ago, and nothing since. :dontknow: Not good for business.

Anyone have some input for me??

Works Perfomance Shocks

Emailed the company twice with inquiries about pricing, availability, options etc but have never received a reply.

Got an E-mail from Tom today. Seems that business is good, and order tracking hasn't kept up. He stated the shocks would ship by 4pm today. I'll keep you posted…..

Well the shocks really are on their way, and only a little more than a set of stock '11s. I exchanged a number of E-conversations with Tom @ Works, the last I thought I'd share with the forum:

Bill,

In reply to your comments, we are certainly well aware of the estimated lead time issue. We have been battling it for some 38 years! You'll notice, if you look back to our initial correspondence that I state a 2-6 week (approximate) lead time. While this is not what either we or the customer want, it generally is the case and in the scheme of things, some orders will go out before and some after the estimated lead times, with the bulk falling within. I would love to be able to quote a firm delivery date, but in the custom built suspension world, that is just a dream.

We base the estimate on an "average" order completion time. There is no way for the sales person to know whether all the components required for a particular order are in stock or not at the time the order is taken. The parts bill of materials (BOM) is not created until the build sheet is completed further down the line in the Tech. Dept. and a part number is generated for the order.
The estimate is rarely spot on, but is often less than estimated and, unfortunately, sometimes grossly underestimated. This is always due to component availability. Works is a unique company and the only company who custom builds to specification, based on the specific needs of the customer, on the large application scale that we do it at. Our application list is for over 4000 machines spanning some 30,000 part numbers. Because we custom build to order and do not stock finished product, we are constantly machining components in house. In addition to what we do in house, we have long time vendors who produce our many different springs to specification, plate and anodize our machined parts, do custom welding, produce rubber components like bushings and bumpers, supply a myriad of seals and o-rings etc.. The list of parts to be made by both us and our vendors is exhaustive. Our task is a complex and often frustrating process of the production of many and varied specific components, compounded by the lead times of our outside vendors for supply of many more varied components. We do not have an automated assembly line in the conventional sense. Each order is built by human hands.

When I come in to work each day, I will speak to customers from all over the country and often, customers in other countries around the world. Each of these customers has a specific need. My first call may be from you with a need for Spyder shocks. The next call is from someone in England with a rare factory road race bike from the 1950's,; the next for a custom bike for land speed racing at Bonneville; then a customer with a Gyrocopter, or someone from the movie industry who has an atv fitted with a camera platform that needs to carry 6 people and a camera rig requiring multiple shocks to damp both the movement of the vehicle and the camera boom apparatus. The next guy has a Harley, weighs in at 360 pounds and has a 250 pound passenger and tows a trailer. We do not stock shocks for these applications. Each one requires a different product specific to their application and chassis geometry. You can begin to see how complex this business gets!

We have been in business as a custom suspension company for some 38 years producing not only motorcycle suspension but also products for a wide range of other custom applications. We build the nose landing gear suspension for the Predator series of unmanned drone aircraft. We suspend some of the rides for Disneyland. We are currently designing and building a shock to damp the chain lash of a 14,000 pound drive chain on a coal slurry pump being used in the coal mining industry. These kinds of applications require the design, scheduling and manufacture of parts that do not exist until we make them. The production of these parts is blended with our normal production of motorcycle, atv and snowmobile shock components. If you want to lose your hair, step into the production managers shoes for a few days!

Anyway, I hope this gives you a little insight into the complexity of the process involved in producing many and varied complex products on a custom, one order at a time basis. We are not and will never be on par with McDonalds nor do we claim or want to be. While we may indeed be the "Chinese restaurant" of shock absorbers in terms of our vast and varied menu, you will not be able to step up and order your suspension, wait five minutes and pick it up at the end of the counter. However, the product you get is first class in looks, materials and performance and in my opinion, after 16 years of experience at this company and having used Works products on my own bikes for over 20 years, is well worth waiting for. No one makes a better product than we do and we stand behind it with a performance guarantee.

I hope this gives you a little more insight into the nature of the company and the products we proudly make with American hands in the USA. We may not always do things at the speed required to keep everyone absolutely happy , but we are still here plugging away for our customers after nearly forty years!

If you have the desire, you can probably get on the net and ferret out the Speed Vision episode that was done on Works Performance several years ago.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Yes, that is indeed quite an explanation! But it doesn't explain why multiple phone calls with voice mails left for different WP personnel were never returned in my case, these calls and messages being made both by me and my dealer. That included a one or two made to Tom Edison. If it's due to inadequate staffing it would be in WPs best interests to hire someone just to respond to customers calls, route them appropriately, and make certain the calls are returned. In other words a customer service supervisor, which I got the impression they do not have.

I fully agree with this statement and I do like my shocks very much. I would recommend them to anyone wishing to improve the handling of their RT, although I have no experience, and thus no basis for comparison, with other aftermarket shock suppliers for the Spyder, such as Elka and Penske. In my 42 years of two wheel riding I have had several friends who have used WP shocks on their two wheelers and they were always satisfied. Works Performance's reputation in the two wheeled world is very high.

Previously I never thought I could recommend a companies products that has such deficient customer service, but in the case of Works Performance I do. But, prospective WP customers should be aware that time from order to shipment may be very long and there may be difficulties in communication. So patience may be in order. Unfortunately, patience has never been one of my strengths! ;)

The shocks actually arrived today - UPS dropped them off at 6pm… headed for the garage to put them on..

If the work as good as they look, wow!

Well, they're installed, and running the RT down a couple of local back roads, it was worth the investment and worth the wait. This is a different machine.

I can't speak about the Elkas, other than the quote I got was 2X the Works price, but I would not have believed the difference. My corners are at least 10mph faster, and the bike no longer feels like it's rolling around the corners. The bike stays flat, and you can accelerate out of the corner with confidence.

I hope my old shocks give the same performance the an RS….

Gotta say, the left shock was a real PITA to install… even with that, about 90 minutes.

Your experience with the performance of your Works Performance shocks (no pun intended ;)! ) is similar to mine. Mine arrived with the compression damping set on the lowest setting and after some experimentation I've been using a mid-level setting. WP strongly advised against changing the preload, at least not before considerable experience with the shocks, and I haven't. I set the rebound to match the compression damping setting, mid-level.

I'm glad you're happy with them.

Enjoyed reading the comments on the Works shocks. I put a set on my BMW R1100RT several years ago and was really pleased with them. I just got though installing a set of 2011 RT shocks on my 2010 RT and, after some trial and error adjusting, they are working well set on preload position 4. The RT corners much flatter with much less body roll than before. The ride is a little bouncy solo but is nice and smooth 2-up. I wish the damping was adjustable. I would like to try just a touch less compression damping and a bit more rebound damping.

When I was doing some research before buying the Works shocks for my BMW, I was surprised to find that Works Performance actually began as a company by rebuilding Curnutt shocks. Curnutt shocks were legendary in the dirt bike world, especially in southern California desert racing. But Charlie Curnutt didn't rebuild his shocks so when you wore them out you just had to throw them away and buy new ones. Gil Vaillancourt began rebuilding and improving the valving on Curnutt shocks and the result was Works Performance. They build an excellent product and when I win the lottery I'm gonna get a set for my RT.

Thanks for the history - hadn't realized that's where they started, and are still fairly small.

FYI, I was quoted $474 for a new set of 2011 BRP shocks, fully assembled, by our local dealer - the Works Shocks were under $670 (+ shipping, of course), more than worth the $200… Compared to the materials and workmanship on the stockers, the WS are a work of art. They even came with a machined adjustment wrench that is pretty enough to frame - not some punched out pot metal POT - JMHO

I spent just about $220.00 for the 2 shocks, 2 adjuster rings, and 2 adjuster ring protectors. The springs and retainers are the same for both years so I just changed those out and put them on the RT. So in my case the difference was more like $450.00 and I just couldn't swing it. I agree with you that for only $200.00 difference, I would have gotten the Works shocks as well. They truly do build a quality product. Another thing to consider is that the Works shocks are rebuildable, or I assume they are, where the BRP shocks are not. So they can be rebuilt as long as you own them.

Not only rebuildable, but also upgradable, should one decide they want more.

Can't wait for a bit of decent weather to see what the new limits are...

Hey Dragonrider... Have you had a chance to give those new shocks a good workout yet? I just ordered a set of Works Shocks for my RT. Quick way to drop a cool thousand dollars. I already have the Evoluzione Sway Bar and will install that at the same time. Sure hope it all helps to tighten up that front end. We've been having a lot of wind lately in Arizona and when hitting the freeways with all the heavy truck traffic, it keeps you real busy.

Think "slot car" -at least 10 + faster in the corners. Forget trucks! Running 20/30 in the tires. I've nothing bad to say, other than the left one is a PITA to install. Still have cuts & bruises.... But worth it. :D
