• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Won't Start

My 2008 GS SM5 failed to start leaving work today
Turned key on...dash lit up and died
Hooked up to a jump for 10 min, and dash came on but wouldn't start...just click
Pop Started it to get it home...
pulled the battery at home and cleaned and tightened everything up...still wont start
Unlaiden voltage is 12.8....when cranking the spyder the battery drops to under 7v
left the battery out and hooked jumper cables to the truck...still just clicks, theoretically, is it supposed to start when doing this or not?
I'm just trying to figure out if I need a new battery or if I have something bigger....
Anyone have any ideas?

Had similar issue with another bike. Was the started buggered up. Sounds same if you boost it and nothing then either relay or starter with that kind of voltage drop.

Try checking your voltage with the headlights on then step on the brake to activate the brake lights. If you get a substantial voltage drop, say under 12v then your battery is likely the problem.

Your battery is shot. It should not drop below 10.0 volts when cranking. A dealer or battery shop can perform a more sophisticated load test, but I wouldn't bother. Yours failed the shop manual test miserably. Time to buy a new battery.

If that's the original battery, dollars to donuts your battery is shot.
It might show a full charge when you boost but it wont hold it.

I agree that the battery os shot....but what perplexes me is that the bike wont start with the battery removed and jumped to a running truck. Basically i removed the battery and connested the positive wire to the positive on the truck...by way of jumper cable. And did the same for the ground....and i couldnt get the spyder to do anything more than click.
My hope was to be able to say for sure it was the battery...but since it didnt work...idk
unless there is a reason i havent thought of as to why that little test wont work?

It's possible your jumpers don't have enough surface contact to carry the amperage like when a battery's cables are bolted solid to the terminals.

I have an electric start log splitter, The battery is absolutely shot.
When i tried to start it with just jumpers it wouldn't start, when i ran the jumpers though the dead battery
it would start.:dontknow:

Got it squared away....guess it was just a battery.
picked one up from interstate and the spyder is back to normal.
thanks for all the advice!
