Wiring the Integrated High Mount Light from Custom Dynamics

Greetings all .... getting ready to install the Integrated HMT (the new High Mount brake light that also has turn signals built into it). :helpsmilie::helpsmilie: The instructions at this location: http://www.customdynamics.com/can_a...m#Street_Magic_Genesis_LED_RT_HMT_Brake_Light

... say that the connector harness has five wires, but the harness I was sent only has three. After talking with tech support at Custom Dynamics, I now understand why ... the Spyder is wired in such a way that the turn pulses are sent uniquely to each of the individual tail lights. So, if the Integrated HMT is wired into the right tail light connector, then only the right turn signal works on the unit. Thus, their instructions have changed, as follows:
  1. Go ahead and plug the harness "in between" the two halves of the right side tail light connector (could just as well be left, but the wires from the HMT come down the right side of the trunk).
  2. Wire in the dual converter so the unit functions as both brake and running.
  3. Connect the three wires from the harness pigtail to wires from the HMT -- black to black, red to red, and orange to orange; this enables the middle section of the HMT (brake and running). All connections at this point are with posi-locks.
  4. For the right turn signal, locate the brown wire from the HMT and use a posi-tap connection to the brown wire on the RIGHT turn signal connector.
  5. For the left turn signal, locate the purple wire from the HMT and use a posi-tap connection to the purple wire on the LEFT turn signal connector

I've done the "dis-assembly" portion of the install -- trunk lid, back panel, back fascia, and have loosened both tail lights to have easy access to all connectors. Of course this is a holiday weekend and I didn't think to ask the following questions of Custom Dynamics tech support.

  • For steps 4 and 5, where I posi-tap into the correctly colored wire, on which side of the Spyder harness do I tap in (the "bike" side or the "light" side)? :hun:
  • Does it make a difference which side is tapped?
  • I plan to protect the wires with shrink tubing where they pass through holes or might otherwise get chafed. Should I do something to protect the "posi" connectors as well? If so, what would you recommend?

This is all pretty spooky for me ... first time I've really taken anything apart on the :spyder2:. Since it is almost "plug-n-play" I think I can handle the electrical side pretty well, just need to confirm the correct / best location to tap the wires.

Advice from "our panel of experts" appreciated .... Thanks Much .... Ann

The instructions come a lot clearer once you have read them a few times and start working on the:spyder2:. I've installed 2 already and it gets easier. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply ... but the instructions for the new Integrated HMT are no longer valid ... unless I just want one turn signal out of the unit. The instructions for the standard HMT, that is just a brake and running light, are good and easily understood. The addition of the turn signals to this light has meant a change in how it has to be hooked up because of the way the Spyder is wired.

I just need to know the proper location and treatment for the posi-taps to enable turn signals from this light. Note that Custom Dynamics has only had them out for a few weeks.

Thanks again .... Ann

Remembering back from my 1st install to the second, The first one I had a real hard time reaching for the adapter on the right side. When I did it the second time, I ended up removing the back fender and the brake/signal lights because I was also installing the red RT Brightsides. Besides, since the wiring of the 2013's is different, I felt that it was NEEDED to remove that light in order to connect the adapters.

Install

You really need to study the instructions while you study the install area with all the interference removed and study it until you see it come together in your mind. It takes a little time before it all sets in your mind and then it really comes together easily.:doorag:

Instructions -- NOT VALID for Integrated Unit

Thanks for the reply ..... but, as stated above (now twice), the instructions for the integrated unit are NOT VALID because of the way the Spyder is wired. The final step states:

"13) Using supplied Posi-Lock and Posi-Tap connectors from kit, connect wires from HMT unit to harness coming
from tail light. There are 5 wires coming from the harness; an orange, a red a Black, Brown, and a Purple. Hook
black wire from HMT to black wire from harness, Brown to Brown, and Purple to Purple.. (see Pic. #16)"

The problem is that the connector harness included with the kit only has THREE wires and I have been given VERBAL instructions to use included posi-taps to tap the brown wire into the right signal and the purple wire into the left signal. So, I can study the instructions for eternity and they will never match reality (portions of them do and I've had success with those). I have completed the install to the point where I am ready to wire the unit in .... I just need to determine if I should "tap" the bike side of the turn signal or the light side. Note that I'm leaning towards the bike side so that the tail lights continue to be removable.

Custom Dynamics really needs to either update the instructions for the integrated unit or take them down until they can be updated and I will suggest that next time I have the occasion to speak with them.

As always ... thanks for the input ... Ann

YIPPEE ... done!:yes: As it turned out, I decided to "tap" the bike side of the tail light connector at pin-4 on both sides -- checked the troubleshooting instructions in the RT "green manual" to see what the pin-out was on the connector. So proud of myself , this mod was almost entirely done on my own as spydercowboy is still laid up recovering from bone graft surgery -- he rolled out in his power chair several times to see how things were going, but not really able to offer much assistance other than keep me from doing something really wrong. Basically, I just took my time and kept checking things at every step ... used a 9-volt to check the LEDs before starting and then after any step where I was pulling on the wires.:D

So, now the :spyder2: has a fancy new high mount light on the trunk that is:
  • Running light
  • Brake light
  • Left and right turn signal
  • Hazard flasher

If we weren't in the middle of a nasty storm, I'd go take a little video (with some help from spydercowby) and upload -- maybe tomorrow the weather will cooperate and we can let ya'll see what it looks like and how it functions.

This is SO COOL! :ohyea::ohyea: Thanks for letting me "type" my way through figuring this out .... Ann

Congrats, Ann!! I give you a lot of credit for hanging in there and working through all the ambiguities and obstacles. Don't think I could have done it, so big props to you!!:clap:

Thanks Madonna! :D It was worth the extra visibility in the end -- a two hour install probably took me four hours with all the checking and look ups in the service manual. As you can see from the video, this new unit from Custom Dynamics is really bright and adds not only the brake / running lights but also turn signals. :2thumbs: Note that I will be sending suggested updates to the instructions to Custom Dynamics.

PS. -- Sorry for the FB link on the video, it's my only avenue to to upload at this point.

Not a hard install..

This is nota hard install once you understand that the HTM by itself is only a running light. If you also purchased the Dual Converter Kit, then it functions as a brake light as well. They also have a new kit that also functions as additional turn signals. All kits contain enough posi-taps to connect as required. No shrink wrap is needed. Would need to know exactly which HTM you purchased for anyone to offer help. I installed the original HTM with the dual converter on my 2013 RT Limited and had no issues with the instructions.

Step 5 a, b, c missing

Installed the High Mount Break light only this weekend on my 2013 RT-L and must say that although the instructions are not that hard to follow but I when I got to locating and separating the plug in the harness my hands said no way. With room for only to fingers decided to remove a few more screws to drop the right tail light the rest became very simple. All in all took a little over 2 hours.

Good reminder! Many of us have realized this, and it was posted before. Much easier with the taillight removed. Always a good thing to repeat good advice.

Thanks ... I purchased the NEW unit, as stated above and shown in the video, and had to:

  • Drop the back fascia and remove both tail lights
  • Route three of four wires to the right tail light (where the HMT harness plugs in)
  • Route the fourth wire to the left tail light
  • Wire in the dual converter (for brake light)
  • Plug the harness into the right tail light (three wires from harness)
  • User pos-lock and posi-tap to connect the resulting five wires to the harness and the two tail lights

The instructions for this new unit indicate that the plug-in harness has five wires, when in fact it has only three. In order for to allow the HMT turn signals to function, one must "tap" BOTH the right and left tail light harnesses -- something the current instructions say nothing about.

Because of my nervousness, and constant checking of the HMT, this probably took a little over three hours (over two days) from start to finish. Glad it's done and glad for the added visibility!

Thanks .... Ann

I just installed the HMT Brake light, with running light option. All I had to do is remove the rear panel, losen the black fender and right tail light, and hook the Custom Dynamics 5 pin connector and dual converter into the existing harness. Worked like a champ and the instructions were very clear as to how to do it. The dual converter gave it running and brake lights. Nice. My installation was on a 2013 RT Limited.
