Why I'm NOT Buying a 2014 RT

This site is not unlike so many because some people act like they know what they are talking about when in fact they don't :) The GTO production was capped because of production commitments to other models and had NOTHING to do with unions.. I had an 06 GTO too and had no problem getting parts and basically drove the car for free after the yearly $500 dollar insurance cost.. Stewart got a nice new car and it'd be nice to congratulate him an move along,,,, but like most everything ,,some people w an EYORE COMPLEX " Winnie the Pooh reference " are compelled to insert their own experience as EVERYONES or make negative comments.. Your statements about the production cap being union driven are absent of fact and offensive,, period..

My apologies. It appears that the limit was due to production..but when I bought my '05 even GM reps were saying it was a union contract limit. Either way... 16K is a lot more than 4K.

And you can argue about parts all you want but, again, I personally knew people that waited many months for simple body panels and other parts. They had their cars sitting at GM body shops for a long time making payments on something they couldn't drive while parts were delayed from Australia. My note about insurance was correct, at least for me here in NC. It had a higher insurance rate due to parts cost than other similar cars. Just something to consider.

It's a very nice car. I also SERIOUSLY considered buying a G8 GXP but when Pontiac got shut down but all the 6-speeds were going over sticker and I'd never pay that for a dead-end car. I love Holdens. But you need to understand the good and bad aspects of buying one.

The 4th Gen GTO is one hell of a sleeper car..just like that SS.

Great Car. Much better since they made it as a stand alone.
We have a 2007 SS Impala and it is ok, (never really turned me on) but the new SS version is to a much higher level. You will really like it.

My wife and I have been watching this car since Chevy announced it last summer. It's a 2014 Chevy SS. As opposed to being a trim package for an existing model, the SS is now its own model. It is a rear wheel drive performance sedan, has an LS3 Corvette engine / transmission, puts out 415 HP bone stock and has a top speed of 160+ MPH. It is made in Australia by Holden for Chevy and they're only importing 4000 of them.

On top of that, I was one of the lucky ones who got a 2013 RT without the heat issues. With the modifications I've done over the winter, it is now running really well, so between that and the SS, the new RT will have to wait for a few more years :)

Congrats on the SS. If I were ready to trade my current car, that would be one in contention. Only down side is no AWD. I had a 2005 Yellow Jacket GTO that I loved and will keep kicking myself until I die for ever trading it. Though that is what enabled us to get the Sypders so I am at least happy about that. ;) The SS is a sweet car and that engine will be awesome.

Parts availability is a valid concern, but I think and hope it won't be an issue for the SS. The SS is actually the same car as the Holden VF Commodore that was first produced in 2013 and should continue to exist until 2017. Both cars also have some ancestry from the Pontiac G8. Holden is shutting down in Australia, but Chevy has already announced that they are moving production of the SS to the USA. It will always be a niche car with limited production, but I think that Chevy is committed to keeping it alive by bringing it here. If not, then I'll have to deal with the parts issue which should be no different than owning a Spyder :)

Producing the SS has been a long term strategy for GM / 1. GM is currently the ONLY mfr in NASCAR w an availible V8 rear drive PERFORMACE production car for purchase.. 2. The SS is a derivative of the police car that has been in the US for 2+ years now / they can be produced on the same line.. Chevrolet also wanted to round out is performance car line up and the SS does that.. Stewarts comment about the car being produced in North America is correct.. Parts availability fluctuates no matter where a car is built .. When the Monte Carlo was re introduced a few years back we had a case where a customer waited almost 3 months for parts for his wrecked car and the parts and the car were being made in Ontario.. All sorts of stories and like MOST things your results may vary :)

One thing many do not know about the GTO 05 /06 model was that in stock form the car was software restricted to 159 mph top speed / remove the restriction and the car would top out at 179 mph.. With the cars full price at the time there wasn't a stock car at that price point with that level of performance.. Today there still isn't a $35,000 car that will reach those speeds w just a software restrictor removed.. When I owned my 06 GTO I was in semi daily contact w many of the engineers who built the car and even talked with Bob Lutz on a number of occasions concerning the GTO.. He was the hardest push to get the car here and subsequent models..

Ford builds the Mustang, Chrysler builds the Charger and Challenger. All three of these are V8, front engine, RWD cars. Ford needs a performance 4 door sedan. The SHO not bad but no v8.

The parts problem with the GTO was much more specific and permanent. The cars were only a few years old at the time and GM decided it was no longer profitable to source parts for such a limited production vehicle. As a part of thier 'bail out' agreement they were excused from the mandated parts availabity and took full advantage of thier customers. Not parts delays, parts gone and never produced again. GMs history of lack of any concern for thier customer base is longstanding. Its sold, its not thier problem. Shall we count delayed recalls? No, better not because then we would have to bring Toyota in to the discussion and it would get religious.

I drive a 2006 Ford with MUCH smaller sales volume than the GTO. Every part is available for order. Some do go on back order from time to time but they ARE available and comitment from Ford to KEEP them available. Its just a different mindset. Many folks don't get it or believe it does not matter.

Holden makes good cars. I owned two Holden-built GTOs...'05 and an '06.

Unfortunately for thousands of workers GM has announced that they are ceasing production of motor vehicles (Holden) in Australia, as have Ford and Toyota. In a couple of years we will have no car industry at all.

Yes, that would be the Chevy Caprice. The NY state police were showing one off at the local car show last year and there are many similarities.

Jcthorne / re read my post slow before you comment please :) Maybe you missed the big word NASCAR.. This thread is not about GM bashing is it ???

Jcthorne / your comment about parts availability or lack of per the bailout conditions is wrong as well.. The parts for any GM brand pre bailout will be available for a loooooong time.. Stating misinformation as fact is really not cool :)

Why not? Maybe not today...but probably later. My GTO wasn't cheap to insure for that reason..parts from Australia. I knew people that waited MONTHS and MONTHS for things like floor pans after an accident. GTOs came in to the country in larger numbers too. The unions capped them at like 16K/yr. 4K/yr is far less.

It's just something to consider if you plan to keep a car like this for a long time. 2 or 3 years and it won't matter. GM needs to stop letting the unions run that company. Holden makes some damn good cars that I'd love to see in the US. Very nice performance cars with build quality that surpasses most of what comes out of the US plants.

It's not a GTO it is a rebadged G8 and THAT was an awesome car in it's right. Parts will be VERY available it is a Chevy now. By the way the unions do not run GM you know so little about how it operates. This from a former GM union member. If we did the Cobalt never would have gone to market we hated it just like the Vega.
