• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Whistling Noise in First Gear

I just got my 2013 RT/S and am learning to ride. Have not been out of first gear yet!! BUT a quick question...I am hearing a whistling noise in first gear. Is this normal?

You will hear some wind noise as it contacts the wind screen. Generally I hear it about 20 mph. It's faint, and more of a whoosh than a true whistle. If this is your first motorcycle, I'd guess this is what your a hearing. If your a veteran, and it's a true whistle...as in a screech, then it's abnormal.

I can't think of any portion of the rotax engine or transmission that could whistle, even if it was having mechanical issues. The brakes are a different story..lol.

See if it whistles some as it coasts with the clutch pulled in. That will remove the engine out of the equation. Then I would only suspect it's the fairing.

Ultimately, we need more details.

You said you're still on first gear, on what gear? what is your rpm? Try to go on second gear when you reach 4000 rpm. If does go away, take it to your dealer.

The sound is noticeable above 3200 rpms and does diminish as the reps drop off and is not evident at idle. This all while in 1st gear. Have not had a chance
to check at +4300 yet. It is not a belt squeal as you can hear sometimes in a car. Also, does not sound like wind. Sounds like a drivetrain noise, only have a few miles of running so maybe a wait and see situation.

Could easily be simple belt or gear whine. In that case it would be fairly normal. If in doubt, see your dealer.

Noise

When in doubt, check it out! With your dealer is the best way. It probably is gear surfaces starting mate with each other and nothing to worry about.

Good luck with your new ride and get it up to speed soon so you can really have some fun.

Hard to say..!!

When do you expect to move on to second and third..?? Then you can see if it is first gear. A whine or a whirring hopefully not a grinding sound would be in line with a gear as for whistling, would have to be an air leak or wind passing though a specific part at some specific speed. If the RPM's affect it..etc. Mine whines as if it had turbos but runs great..let us know...!!
