I had decided to get a 2013 RT Ltd or RTS to get the new frame and the floorboards. This will be my first Spyder. There are some really good deals on 2012 models right now, which would easily pay for floorboards. So that brings it down to the new frame and suspension. Is the extra $ for a 2013 worth getting the latest design frame and suspension? In your opinion, which way would you go?:dontknow: For argument's sake, lets say the net difference is $2500 to $3000.
Are there any other major upgrades to the 2013 models that I am missing?
Thank you.
Hello and thanks to all Spyderlovers! Excellent site, have learned a lot here. This is my first post and since I am just purchasing a new Spyder I felt I would like to add my thoughts.
Before last week I had never driven a Spyder, had spent some time checking them out, but no seat time. Because of the superb deals on leftover 2012 models I felt now may be a great opportunity to buy. That said I did not rule out paying more for a 13 if it was warranted.
So I head out to a local dealer for some closer inspections and to see what 12 & 13 Spyders are all about. I did my research before visiting the dealer and read all about the upgrades of the 13 models. Reading about all the changes on the 13 models did sound impressive. So from a complete noobie, these are my observations.
I was interested in the RT-S model. Really liked that new yellow color on the 13, sharp. Liked the look of the new tires, rims and fenders. That was about all I could see that was new by looking at one. So now for a test ride. I rode both 12 and 13 models, manual and automatic. After some seat time on each and sitting down with a salesman and having him spin up some numbers I came away with some opinions.
First and foremost I could see absolutely no reason to spend the aprox $5500 more that the dealer wanted for a 13. Add in the 6% sales tax and that number grows to $5830. I saw virtually no difference in the ride or drive and certainly nothing that warranted the added expense. I felt that with the savings I could add some great options such as a carbon fiber dash kit, perhaps Ron's sway bar, some LED front fender lights, an LED licence plate frame, perhaps an LED third stop light for the trunk, some custom pin striping etc and still keep $3,000+ in my pocket. I usually keep machines for quite a while and for sure doubt the resale value of a 12 vs 13 would ever come close to making up the difference in price.
By the way I found the Spyder quite entertaining! Not only does it look like my Ski Doo snowmobile which I recently sold, it kind of drives like it!
I also found myself really liking the manual vs the automatic. I am not ready at this point to give up my regular bikes and feel that the manual will simply be more natural when switching back and forth between machines. So that said I put down a deposit on a new red 12 RT-S SM5 which has the manual tranny for $21,479 OTD. Lookin forward to it!
