• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Which BRP backrest?

Was looking at getting a backrest for the bike so when I take my niece for a ride she can ride in style and comfort. I see two types on BRPs site to pick from but have no idea which is better to get. Not worried about the price I just have no idea which one would be best. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which year and model :spyder2: do you have?

2013 ST-L

Looking at the new catalog pages 59 and 60--the difference seems to be that one version is one piece and the other is adjustable. Interesting that the newest version (non-adjustable) is $650 compared to the adjustable version which is $275. They do have a different look to them, so it looks like adjustability and looks are the factors to consider--since price is not an issue for you.

EDIT: the posters below have you covered well.

The old one requires you have the luggage rack, the new one fits straight to the bike. The old one can be removed by simply pulling a cable and a cover plate put in its place. The new one is removable, but I think it requires a tool ( you might want to check that). The old one is adjustable, the new one isn't. The new one is bigger, both higher and wider. The old one is a case of luggage or backrest whereas the new one can have a top box bolted to it making it luggage and backrest.

Only other thing, I have the old one but have only ridden as a pillion once.. I thought that it gave some security, but wasn't exactly comfortable.

Here's the thing..!!

the backrest for $275.00 requires the sport rack for another $435.00. The adjustment it has is sliding forward and back a few inches. Got ours on ebay a lot cheaper. The sport rack does have a small storage under. I did modify the backrest to add a luggage rack...
20121221_140526.jpg 20121221_081334.jpg has worked well..but then they did not offer the new one back then...

Its around $600 for the "old" version once you add on the Sport Rack which is required to mount it. It is incredibly easy to remove for solo riding and attach again for two up. I have not tried the new style but I am pretty happy with the old one. Its certainly not RT back rest comfortable but its not too bad and its built pretty tough. As for adjustability of the old style, I am not sure it matters much, my wife is pretty small (about 112 pounds) and she likes it adjusted all the way back. I think you'd have to be pretty tiny to need to adjust it forward at all.

Have you looked at the Smoothspyder dual mode backrest. Works for the pillion or the rider when solo.

I've had the experience of owning the old and now the new backrest. At least for me, the new one is much more comfortable, especially for shorter passengers. Just seems to rest on the back at a more comfortable place than the older one. The older version sits more on the lower back while the new one sits more on the mid back. Also, the newer one seems to wrap the passenger a bit more. Removal of the new one is very easy with the included tool and can go back to a non-back rest look very quickly. Price for new and old are fairly similar as expressed by others on this post. Overall, I like the look of the new one more. Finishes off the look of the bike at the rear end a lot better. Hope that helps some. Just my .02.

I have the old one and my wife likes it a lot. I bought mine in Pearl white to match. I did look at a 2014 ST-L with the new back rest and it looks more comfortable and I like the ability to get the center mounted storage for road trips. I do like the looks of the old one a little more.

BRP backrest

I opted for the older model as it was adjustable and at the time the new one was on backorder.
I went for carbon black.
