What's best for Cleaning the Windshield? Anyone use Pledge?

I was always told Windex type products were bad for plastic, can etch and dry out the plastic causing cracking.

:agree: NEVER use Ammonia based product on Plexiglas or plastic products. The ammonia will leach out resins and will eventually not only discolor the windshield, but also make it brittle & susceptible to cracking.

:agree: The Windex products (Multi-Purpose) with vinegar are OK, though. It pays to read the label of any cleaning product, even if the ammonia isn't advertised.

What chemicals should be used to clean the windshields without harming it ? All the chemicals I have, including Honda's Clean and Wax, all have petroleum dissalates. Can that be used or not ? The Honda dealer said that these chemicals will cause dulling of the windshield. What is the answer ?'

Safest thing is to soak it with a wet towel, then use lots of water (and mild soap if needed) and soft, microfiber towels. You can use the Windex Multi-Purpose Cleaner with vinegar, but do not use regular Windex with ammonia...ever! A non-abrasive plastic cleaner/polish such as Plexus or one of the products made for plastic aircraft windshields will also work...but get the bugs off first to avoid scratches.

I m a firm believer in Lemon Pledge. Soak it down good and let it sit for 5 minutes then wipe clean. Then your Spydie smells "Lemon-ey Fresh" ;)

If you wear polarized sunglasses, Lemon Pledge will leave a film that causes a "rainbow" effect on the windshield, as will any other wax/polish product that leaves a residue.

I do the same thing and it lets me tell the wife she can't have those $$$ sunglasses any more. :roflblack:
I am a UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Mechanic and we use the pledge on all of our plastic windshields.

I have heard that if you live and ride in a place where there are alot of bees, the odor from the pledge will attract the bee's to it, I can't confirm that though. I live in AZ so nothing lives in this heat but crickets and cockroaches.

I just got back from Deptford Honda Yamaha in Deptford, N.J. I have never seen a motorcycle store as beautiful and as large as this one. It looked like a Nordstrom for motorcycles. While I was there, I found Plexus, which is used for all forms of lexan, plexiglass, acrylic etc. It was $20 for a can. The dealer said it was an excellent product for the windshields. I thank you for mentioning it on your post.
Otherwise, I would never have known about this product. After purchasing the Plexus I stopped by my Spyder dealer and he agreed that the Plexus is excellent for all these windshields. He also said that the standard Honda Pro Cleaner & Wax is excellent for the rest of the Spyder.

Ok, so it's time to give Big Blue a bath. I've noticed the sticker on the windshield that says certain cleaners can damage the surface. My question: Is regular old Windex ok? I've taken him on a few trips and he's sustained multiple barrages of heavy enemy fire (bugs). I don't want to use anything that could potentially damage the windshield. Suggestions?

Absolutely not! Never use anything with ammonia. If you need a cleaning solution from the grocery store, Windex Multi-Surface with vinegar is safe. The best cleaner is lots of water, so you don't scratch the windshield. Never use a dry cloth...even a microfiber cloth. A plastic cleaner/polish like Plexus is another good bet.

I learned from others at Spyderfest 2012, to use Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle. Spray it on, the bugs foam up and dissolve, wipe it off. Easy and effective.

On a serious note... interesting trick!:read:

when i removed the windshield last week for the first time only to remove that old gray piece of metal to place a new chrome bracket in its place i noticed that the windshield was scuffed kinda badly really shows up when resting against the chrome is there something i can do to remove the scuffs or do i get a new screen and pray it don't happen again?like i said this was the first time i took the screen off in over a yr.

Yup but I mix it 50-50 with water. This is always in my garage and the bugs literally melt off (and not the paint). Wipe with a nice clean microfiber towel.

I use Pro Honda Spray Cleaner and Polish on all surfaces except seat, grips, pegs and tires. Also second the microfiber towels. I keep a can and some towels in both bikes.

A great question now that spring is almost upon us. I still have my spray bottle of Windex down in the garage. I am going to replace that with the HP and give it a try. I like the idea of bugs disolving. We don't get that a lot--but when the first spring warm days hit, the bugs seem to come out of nowhere.
