What to pack?

Desert Spyder

New member
I don't think I've seen a thread like this yet?

I'm going on a week long adventure with the wife on my RT (Spyder in the Redwoods).

Using the space allowed, and I have the soft bags for the back and a roll away for the frunk, what do I bring? What should I bring for the :spyder2:?

I told my wife I'll wear 3-4 pair of underwear on the way up:thumbup:.

I am going from a desert environment where it might reach 109 to a coastal forested area of 60 avg.

I will be using my California Air Conditioner (the Pacific Coast Hwy) on the way up. It will take 2 days to get to my destination, and two days back. Rain shouldn't be an issue but you never know. Keep in mind there is a female in back.

You will need to bring the following for you

8 pairs of underwear
1 pair of jeans
8 tshirts
8 pairs of socks

For your wife:

1 RT-622 and fill it with anything her heart desires!

:agree: Two Spyders hold twice as much as one. :2thumbs:

To cut down on the amount of clothes, bring a bag of quarters for the laundromat.

Both y'all wear dark clothes, that way there's only one load of laundry and no sorting.

Have a sock bag full of one type socks that both of you can wear.

Two pair of road pants, two pair of nice pants.

A couple of road shirts, a couple of long sleeved shirts, (think layering) and a couple of nice shirts. (You know you'll be buying some along the way.)

Can't have enough dainties. Bring more than enough.

An overnight kit is assumed.

Bring rain gear. Its good insurance that it won't rain.

As for what you Spyder will need, there are loads of threads on that subject.

Make that 10 pair of undies. I know of at least two stretches of PCH where you will need them. :yikes:

Just did the same trip 2 days ago. PCH is beautiful. Was in the redwoods 2 weeks ago. Rode from San Fran up there. Stay near the coast when you can. Jeans and T,s or long sleeved cotton T,s work great. be sure and have a warm sweat shirt or jacket to wear as it can get cool near the coast. Rain gear that will also work well as a wind breaker also and in the evenings . Other than that there are plenty of laundrymats. Just take a few rolls of quarters. 4 undies and 3 pairs of socks and your good to go. I took nothing special for the Spyder. You can buy oil if you need it but that should be it except a good cloth to clean the windshield. Have fun and ride safe.. N

Wow! Some ... interesting suggestions here. 10 pair of underwear? Really? I won't be able to buckle my belt. :gaah: Hard time doing it without shorts. :lecturef_smilie:

I like the clothes of one color idea.

If I ever go to the east coast I'd ship my clean clothes ahead to the hotel and ship the dirty ones back when I get there. A chain of disposable clothes store across the country would be good too. Wait a minute. Walmart.

Besides a tooth brush and tooth paste <smile> Have a great trip up there, I'll be praying for your safety and looking forward to meeting you up there!!! I always thought I could tie a soft clothing bag from the console to across the frunk lid, of course you'd need to tie it down for left/right movement.

On another note, DO NOT pack ANYTHING you DON'T need. KISS. You will end up being surprised at what you will not use, even though you thought you REALLY needed it.

Yazz has it right...bring a pair of shorts to wear in evenings....plus when you wash clothes.....lotz of hotels/motels have washer/dryers.....I'm getting ready for a 2 week trip...wear a pair of jeans...bring a pair of jeans....4 shirts,(2 long sleeve..2 short sleeve) a demin shirt....mesh jacket...gerbing jacket....undies/socks for 4 or 5 days...wear riding boots...bring flip-flops to wear in hotels/motels....tennis shoes.....rain gear....swimsuit....2 pair of gloves....umbrella..(if you get stuck on road for shade)...Spyder tool kit....to worry to much...as you travel you will learn that if you forgot someting you need...Wally World is just around the corner...and for your wife....all stores will ship anything she wants to purchase......have fun

10 years ago (when we were in our early 60s) a buddy and I did a 3 month 13000 mile trip from Oregon across to PEI, south to Florida - well, you know, all around. We took another friends advice and brought with us only very old underwear and socks. Throw them away after _______ (insert your level of comfort as to number of days to wear) and stop by Costco or Wally World and get a new package. Worked great.:clap:As we were Harley riders we took only a few teeshirts with us, buying more along the way. Oh, and we each had trailers, his even had a spare tire which was needed somewhere in MN. A memorable trip. :2thumbs:

Just add a toothbrush and that's about right for me. :2thumbs:

It seems like I need more room for my electronics (laptop, camera, GPS, handheld radios) than I do for clothes. :D

You know, a credit card can make up for a lot of "oops, I forgot that" Packs lights too:thumbup:

Ooo, you're slick Trickie Dick.

I remember when we went to the owners rally in Hollyweird on my GS I slung a bag around my mirrors, but it was daylight, and I didn't realize I was blocking the headlights until we left the bowling alley to go to another hotel that night. Since there was no where else to put it my wife had to hold onto it between us for the short trip without holding onto the grips.

Its my guess most people on their first long adventure tend to overpack.

I know you will laugh, but you could wear your underwear 2 days.... turn them inside out for the second day and then do the pitch and buy new. LOL:shemademe_smilie:

Listen to this man, he and his wife have traveled further than anyone I know with less than anyone I know. nojoke

:agree:
iphone
GPS times 2 (I keep a spare just in case)
Laptop and everything that goes with it
Camera and charger
Two video cameras and chargers with spare batteries
Ram mounts
ipod
12 volt usb charger
extra cables for everything
earbuds- keep at least 3 sets of those

I like to have plenty of socks and underwear as they don't take up too much room.

I mostly wear t-shirts and denim shirts while riding and they can get pretty gross from road grime so I carry plenty of those if it's going to be hot weather, cold weather is not such an issue.

I can make a pair of pants last a week if I don't have to work on anything along the way but I have one set for sure if the others get wet. I hope my new rain jeans will fix that.

I will say plan for everything weather wise. There's nothing worst than being cold on a ride because you thought it was going to be hot on the whole trip. Been there done that and it's never much fun. nojoke

We carried everything we needed, including a laptop to daily record our trip, in the trunk and a set of GIVI 35 saddle bags. Nothing hanging. We sent one postal box home after we had collected a few "gimmis" from places we went to. 2 shirts each and one pair of jeans each. Each a pair of shorts to wear when washing the jeans. 2 pairs of socks each, underwear is optional (I have found it a lot more comfi not to wear any riding a motorcycle...Spyder...). Jennifer washed our T-shirts nightly in the motel sinks, hung to dry and if still a little damp come morning, we put them on and got dry within a few minutes. On warm enough days, our jackets went into the trunk. We had His and Her's saddle bags for our clothes (we each used a pillow case to carry the clothes...a lot more flexible than a bag insert). Tooth brush, paste, shaver, etc., made up the rest. 13,624 miles in 7.5 weeks with no issues on our Old Fathful 2008 SE5.
For us, a trip is not a glamor show. We ride because we enjoy riding. No one we see today (except friends) will ever see us again in our travels, so how we look to them is of no importance to us. Worry less about little things, ride in Faith and LOVE the Ride!!!
