What to do first............

Need some help from the vast knowledge of the "Spyder Family". Pickin up my new 2011 RTS SM5 on Saturday. Left the world of off roadin (ATV) recently to take on a new adventure. I am hopelessly addicted to "Mods" and "Accessorizin" so of course the Spyder is no different than everything else! This is the fun part............

Plan to take it easy this summer and enjoy my new ride but I like to cover off the "necessities" as I call them. These are the "add ons" that are best suited for the brand new machine. As an example it looks to me like I want the "SpyderPops" bumpskid, put it on now before I damage the paint on the front and kick my ass for the rest of my ownership experience.

Is there anything else that you would suggest to do now to protect this rather large investment? All the creature comforts will come as time goes on but what about the "do it now" cause you might be sorry after?

I'd suggest that you take some time digging through some of the pictures of Spyders that have already been run through the parts catalogs to see what you really like! Personalizing it will make it yours forever! :thumbup:

Got my adjustable risers today.

My Kewlmetal adjustable risers arrived this morning....now I get to do my "some assembly required" thing.
Aaaaah.....fun and wrenches in the Spyderhaus.

I don't think you would be sorry later for waiting on anything. I am another believer in adding some lights ASAP for safety, though. The ESI Mudflap Lights and HMT Brakelight were my first additions. After that, creature comforts are my focus, so it was a RAM mount for my GPS and Powerlets in the dash.

I woud guess the Tricled (site sponsor) lights for the front fenders, watch color and the 3 and 4 brake light. Then look at all the other mods on here, first.

Don't get ahead of your self, Wait till you get the Spyder, Then after a few miles you will get a better feel of what you'll need to go to make it yours. Remember things put on in haste will sometimes rock the Nanny.

Thanks for the feedback....... When I quit ATVing I also quit ATV forum browsing so now I have a new forum to engage! Had 2 ATV's 1 CanAm Outlander 800R XT (mine) and 1 Suzuki 450 King Quad (wife). Loved the sport but it was getting harder and harder to find riding areas conveniently and our local club was trying but the sport was getting inundated with "my ATV has 4 wheel drive so I should be able to ride whenever and wherever I want". I became the club president but the phone calls from members and the whining just got the best of me. We live in farm country so all the trails are on private property and you have to respect the landowners as they have little to gain from having ATVs on their land. I digress and my blood pressure is starting to boil again.....(deep breath)so traded them in on a Spyder and away we go.

Aftermarket Lighting

Yes I agree this is why I went to the Spyder.....I want to be seen! When I sold my 2 wheeler in 2008 this was one of the largest reasons, just sometimes the cars look right past you.

Now when I owned my CanAm ATV they were somewhat notorious (CanAm) that before 2009 the electrical system was pretty much tapped out and you had to be careful with additional lighting? in 2010 they added the DPS to the line and had to fix their weakness (heavier wattage stator?) but before then you had to be careful. Overload the electrical and get the "Limp Home" mode. How is the Spyder did they allow for additional lighting? I see a lot of the added lighting is LED so lower power consumption but are they pushing the limit on these Spyders? The HMT brakelight and the mud flap kit are for sure on the list.

First, welcome to the life, I have added/replaced every light on my Spyder except for the headlights. I have upgraded the H7 bulbs, but won't go HID. I have also added several other parts, but they are more covert on the looks. Haven't had any electrical issues at all since switching to LEDs. Take a look at my profile to see what mods I have added and ask me if you have any questions. Also, SpyderFest is in a couple weeks, if you can, come on out and ask the 500 owners that will be attending.

The electrical system on the RT is more robust than the RS, but it isn't Hoover Dam. The magneto is rated at 650 watts. It will handle the DPS some lights, and some heated accessories pretty well. as long as you keep the rpm up. I suggest an auxiliary fuse block to handle the new electrical load except for the lights meant to be tapped into the Spyder's circuits. I used the Eastern Beaver 3CS on both of my RT, relay activated via a switched circuit and diode protected.

Orangeville is an awesome town for sure...........will keep the offer in mind for sure! I actually live in St Thomas but most go where (?) so I list it as London as most people sort know where it is.

Have always dealt with Lockharts Odyssey in Courtland, about a 30 minute drive from me. He has always been fair with the ATVs, certainly doesn't give stuff away but I am not one who expects him to either. He was actually one of the original 4 dealers in Canada to distribute the Spyder when BRP first launched in 2008 (?).

I have another BRP dealer 3 minutes from my house and they are OK as well just whenever you want to trade something they lowball. Truth is they really just don't want trades, it would be better if they just told you so up front rather than insult your intelligence? But I buy lots of accessories off them and have had him complete service/ warranty work as well!
