Well after looking into replacing my spark plug and removing the lid of the air box i dont even want to have to put this thing back in. Going to be ordering a Kewlmetal, or Evo air filter tomorrow. My question is my bike will be sitting in my garage what can i cover up the throttle bodies with in the mean time as they will be exposed. i was going to use a t shirt or something along the lines of that but just wanted to make sure. also does anyone else stock filter have oil on it... just checked mine out and it seems to be covered on the 2 outside fins of the left and right side. thanks in advance for the help

Alert! Error Correction! (Alzheimer's Moment)

Lamont called to tell me I had the Air Box Lid removal/install information wrong so I have corrected it below. Don't know what I was thinking on that one!

My appogies to anyone who tried to do it the way I laid it out the first time.

The Air Box lid tends to hang up on the throttle bodies (especially the outside edge of the box). It is getting this to ride over the top of the throttle bodies that is helped with a thin piece of sheet metal.

A clean T-Shirt or shop cloth will work just fine. All you want to do is keep stuff from falling in.

As for your air filter it should be dry. You probaby have the common issue of getting crankcase oil in your air box. There are several good fixes for this.

As for the air box. It isn't a piece of cake but it isn't all that bad once you've got the hang of it. I use a 4"x6" piece of thin sheet metal. I put it between the TOP of the THROTTLE BODIES the INSIDE of the air box. It helps the lid to slide back in place. Size of the sheet metal can vary. I just used what Lamont had laying around (and he's got A LOT laying around!)

Works like a charm!

Also really helps to get it out too.

 I'll have to try that next time...but it's going to render a lot of good cuss words useless. :roflblack:

Bajaron - i actually saw your catch can and im digging it, will it work with the kewlmetal and evo air filter? I figured since it off it can sit there until i get my evo filter ill be out of town from tomorrow till the weekend anyways.

Not everything I do works out all that well but I really like this little mod.

I don't know why it wouldn't work fine with the Evo but have not looked at it close enough to say it will. The only requirement is enough distance between the two hose connections (crankcase to filter housing). I think the Evo actually gives you a bit more distance which would make the install a bit easier than on the stock air box.

Not that it's all that much work anyway.

Not sure where I got that glass filter housing but everyone carries it from Wal-Mart to O'Riley's so it's not hard to find.

PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a chunk of foam.

That airbox "shoehorn" idea sounds like a great tip. Gotta try it. Thanks, Ron!

Please re-check that post on the 'Airbox Shoehorn' because I got that wrong. Don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that.

The sheetmetal goes inbetween the top of the throttle bodies and the inside of the airbox. This helps the airbox lid ride up over the throttle bodies. The airbox lid tends to get hung up on the throttle bodies and this helps it slide right out.

Sorry for the miss-information on that first post. :opps:

I see your correction, thanks. Hope Scotty got it or he may have some NEW cuss words, lol.

You may also want to check with Kewl Metal before doing the canister mod if you are thinking about going with their intake. If I recall correctly, the designed it so the oil blow by would go directly into the throttle body so you would not have the same issue you have with the air box installed.

I do not know anything about the Evoluzione one, so someone else will have to chime in on that.

I just ordered the intake this afternoon. i saw on the youtube video Matt talked about that and put rtv under the plate to keep it from seeping out around the plate. I always thought you only wanted air to go in the throttle body i thought oil would be bad if it went in there.... but what do i know, i am sure no mechanic by any means i know enough to get myself in trouble! the lady there said i should have it by Tuesday / Wednesday

Sounds good to me. Post back here with your thoughts on the entire process once you get it installed. I am thinking about possibly getting that intake in the future as well.

I have no experience with either the Kewl Metal or the Evoluzione intake systems. But if they have the crank case vent situatated so any oil that comes through goes into the throttle bodies, that would definitely take care of the oil getting into the air box.

But personally, I'd rather have the oil in the air box than going down my throttle bodies. Oil getting past the point of no return is the issue which needs to be addressed. Wherever it goes after that is less than ideal whether it makes a mess or not.

You can sweep dust under the rug for awhile but it really is not a good alternative to a correct, long term solution.

Correctly engineered, crankcase pressure is allowed to escape freely while your oil stays where it belongs. Oil should be in the crank case, not coming out the end of a breather tube, no matter where that is.
