What is the cheapest Spyder?

Just started learning about these cool bikes/trikes and am seeing how cheaply I can find one. Pre-owned is fine with me.

Was 2008, the first year these were produced?
What is the lowest-end model? What do you guess would be the cheapest I'd find one?

Try Ebay.
You might find one cheap, but you'll soon find out they aren't cheap to keep!:doorag:

Thanks for the speedy response!
Can you please elaborate? How does maintenance compare to the typical motorcycle. I figured it'd be the same plus the cost of a 3rd tire when the time comes.

:congrats:
The first year was 08, The entry level one is the GS 08/09 now called RS 10/11 The cheapest one would be a wrecked one:joke: But kidding aside, Cheap doesn't always end up being cheap.

:agree: There's that old adage, "You get what you pay for.", that finds a way to bite you on the bottom when you least expect it...
But shopping is STILL more than half the fun!

When I was Spyder shopping last September, the least expensive Spyders were used 2008 models, running around 10-12K from dealers. I was lucky enough to find a new 2009 that a dealer still had in stock for not a whole lot more than the used ones.

Ads that you find online for a Spyder at price a lot lower than that are something I would be very suspicious of. Say, a Spyder for 6K; that is gonna be a scam. Avoid anyone who gives you excuses for why you can't see the bike in person. Check the bike out carefully before purchase, and get a Carfax report if it is used. Good luck.

:agree: with everyone's advice!

I'd start with finding a good dealer. They are the ones that are going to take care of you regardless where the machine came from. The other thing about starting there is that with the RT picking up popularity, a lot of RS owners are "upgrading" so that means used :spyder2: that we could consider "Certified Pre-Own" since the dealer most likely ran their inspections on them. Sure, you can look for someone getting their :spyder2: out of their pockets, but like said before "buyer beware".

Another thing about having a good dealer is the maintenance and repairs. Sure, you can give it your own maintenace as you will read from other members, but at some point your dealer is going to get you the parts and the repairs needed. Also, by buying thru a dealer they will give you an warranty or even sell you a B.E.S.T. plan if you feel that you need one.

In essence, this is a sophisticated animal. You will read this along the way of the threads that the :spyder2: is not your common breed of motorcycle. But like any machine, if you treat it right, you will have a lot of fun like most of us have!

Good luck in your search and :welcome:

All good advice above. Expect to pay 10K and up for most used 2008 Spyders at this time. 2009 and 2010's will likely be more. The price range is from 16K to 29K for the new machines. They cost more to maintain than a regular motorcycle, mainly due to the sophisticated systems on board. A common thread--cheap is not necessarily the best. Most people are not going to service the machine themselves--so a competent dealer/mechanic is important.

I got mine for FREE !!! Just put the bank note in your wifes name without her knowing like I did. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

08 SPYDER

I picked mine up a Month ago. I looked high and low from many venues. I finally found one just the right color, passenger back rest, and not a scratch on it with 1400 miles. I also felt better that it was coming from a CAN-AM dealer. I was alittle sceptical with the deals I saw on e-bay and craigslist. Especially the really low priced ones. I paid $9999.00. I talked to the previous original owner and he was almost 70 and gave me all the ins and outs. He traded it in for a car. The Car dealership also owned a HONDA/Can-AM dealership in another town. They only marked it up less than $500 and did all the updates and changed the oil ,filled the tank and detailed it nicely. I am very happy. Hope you can also find a deal like I did. But be patient. They will probably be selling faster and for more, since the season for riding in the north country is drawing near.:welcome:

Buying the Spyder of your choice is the least of your worries. Buying all of the junk to hang on them is what costs!! :ohyea: :roflblack:

Arntufun, You are gonna get so many demerits if she catches on... :roflblack:

Thats why I make the bills out. She thinks I just do that for her out of love !!! :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Hello I recently bought a used Spyder 2008 GS SE5 got it for $8000.00 with a ATV trade in.. The Spyder had been garage kept and only had 900 miles on it.. before I bought my Spyder.. I followed/read anything I could about Can Am Spyder.. and thought they were the coolest thing in History.. and They ARE!!!.. it is the funniest thing to ride ever.. but I was in the dark about all the costs of maintaining the Spyder.. an Oil Change will run you about $80 if you do it yourself..which is an envoled process(search this site) then there is the 600 mile & 1200 mile service
that is supposed to be done by the dealership.. $ 600 -$1200 (search this site).. then there is tire replacement about $400 or more for all three
basically anything that envolves parts/labor/repair can be major $$$.. look on BRP's site and Ebay to get an idea of what parts and add-on's will cost and if you don't live near a dealership (100 miles closest one for me) that can be an issue too. had to haul mine 250 miles one way to the nearest dealership that had a replacement DPS unit.. a few months ago.. in January during a blizzard up to West Virginia.. do i love my Spyder (YES..YES I DO)
The DPS recall didnt cost me anything but the trip sure did..
Sticker Shock is a big factor when you look at the costs of keeping one of these wild critters.. but I will tell you that I have never had so much fun in my Life.. Me and My wife love it .. If you do get one.. make sure it is up to date on all recalls.. and then look on here for road trip tools for things you need to have with you when you travel.. and have a spare set of tail lights and the four major relays in the fuse box.. and look on here how to mod your tail lights to make bulb replacement easier.. just do alot of searching on this site.. without going on and on.. The Spyder is Amazing.. Keeping the Spyder can be expensive.. but so is every other high dollar toy.. The fun I have had on the Spyder justifies the costs to me.. I know alot of others on this site would agree.. so test drive one and see if you think its worth it to you...

Well... When it comes to tires there are indeed three, but they last longer than typical MC tires.

People are averaging 25k+ on the front tires which are about $70 each(Plus mounting), and the stock rear averages 12k though many like me are using a car tire (again - $75 Plus $100+ for mounting at dealer) and I expect to get 25k out of my new rear...

So, if the math works right, the Spyder for some of us is cheaper on tires with a longer tire service life.

I don't get anywhere near those numbers from OEM tires. I get around 7,000 from a rear and 15,000 from the fronts.

That being said -- that is still about the same or better than most 2 wheelers.

HD buddy of mine just replaces his front and rear and the tires alone were $450..... :yikes:.

I get fronts for $60 each and the rear for $110 and mount them myself and just use Ride-On for the balance.

Oil changes are easy to do-- I've got mine down to 1/2 hour now. Filter and parts cost around $15 - oil around $28 -- so oil change can easily be done for $45 doing it yourself.

1.5 to 2 times as good as for my BMW. I get 3,500-5,000 on a rear, and maybe a little more on the front. The tab to replace both is about $350, if the tires are on sale.

I have just under 17 thousand on my tires, The front look like they'll go another 10, The rear maybe 2 thousand more. Compare that to my VTX18'
Front under 4, the rear 6 and a haft. and that rear went for 375$
Two wheelers eat up tires a lot faster than the Spyder does.
