I figure if Lamont can go to Pennsylvania for BBQ...
I loaded up my amateur radio gear about 10 AM and drove from Ft Gordon (Augusta), Georgia to the Atlanta area. I stopped by Stone Mountain to punish myself by humping a 12-pound HF radio up 800 feet of granite.
The weather was hazy, hot, and humid and I could often hear thunderstorms popping up to the east. Atlanta was barely visible for most of the day.
I called CQ for about three hours in the 20 Meter band (14 MHz), 17 Meter band (18 MHz) and the 10 Meter band (28 MHz). I heard plenty of stations, including a German on vacation in Jamaica talking to a guy in New Jersey, but nobody heard me. There's only so much you can do with 20 watts and a 10-foot whip antenna.
About 5 PM, I headed down and loaded back up. A short while later, I was in Decatur, home of the Brick Store Pub. I discovered this place about six years ago when I was in town for training. They have over 100 beers and a bunch on tap. I limited myself to one Porter with my dinner.
I left about 7:30 PM and got to my apartment about 10 PM. All together, I rode about 300 miles. I finally did something touristy in Georgia, as opposed to just driving back and forth to school, so I've officially added the state to the visited list!
