There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Mine broke today on the way home from the dealership. Among the other issues I am having this is all I needed. Hopefully they can get a replacement dogbone piece by the weekend.

I really wish ALL RT Owners would keep an eye on there's to prevent these failures

Once the crack starts in the cast aluminum "dog-bone" its pretty easy to see & you usually have a while before it actually BREAKS THRU, barring hitting a large pot-hole or speed bump. People please, be smart & learn from our shared experiences & save yourself downtime or worse:dontknow:IMG_20111203_154637.jpgIMG_20111203_120854.jpgIMG_20111203_120900.jpgIMG_20111203_120920-1.jpgIMG_20111203_120440.jpg

Just curious; does anyone know if the broken WS happened from a lot of use, up and down? Or perhaps just from vibration?

I would expect vibration, you would have to be crazy on the windshield switch to wear anything on that system. I expect that most people tend to touch the switch once a ride or less.

when i got my 2011rts i noticed how the wind screen would bounce if you were on a bumpy road and when i went in for my 1st oil change i was looking at the 2012 models and i noticed that brp had made a change on the windshield supports i had pins with a snap ring holding my sheild on and the new 2012 had a sleeve with a screw going into the other end so i grabbed a hold of the windsheild and tried shaking it and got no play from it so i told the service desk i wanted the new screws that were on the 2012 as mine was terrible they had to get a hold of brp so they could get those sleeves but it was a great improvement no more play in the sheild and it didnt cost me i guess they did it for free but after reading this i'm going to go check mine out but get those pins replaced with the new sleeve there using on the 12's.

I had complained to my dealer about the same thing back in 2010 when I bought my RT. Mine also rattled when going down the road. Will look into having my pins replaced with the sleeve and screw. I wonder if the rattling is also why some windsheilds cracked on the original RT's. I thought it was odd that in 2011 BRP made the stock windsheild on the RT smaller than the 2010 models. The original size windsheild, as launched in 2010, is no longer available. My dealership swapped my cracked windsheild with one off of a new 2010 RT in their showroom.

I believe it was a defect in the casting exacerbated over time from road vibrations

And just to be clear here, we're talking about the metal dog-boned shaped bracket that adjusts the windshield up & down with the electric push button, not the actual winshield itself. In my case, I never noticed the crack in the bracket & I DO adjust my shield frequently on every ryde & do ryde daily. Total failure occurred when Teddy & I were ryding thru a local park and went over a speed bump around 10MPH & the bracket broke all the way thru, causing the shield to lay atop the dash.

Mine broke in the middle of an 1,800 mile ride to the east coast. Luckily for me I was pulling my trailer so I just removed the shield all together and put it in the trailer. Riding 800 miles with no shield sucks and wouldn`t you know it, it had to rain on us for part of that. You don`t realize how nice that shield is till you don`t have it. I will see what my dealer has to say this week. BE SURE TO CHECK YOURS. Mine had about 14,000 miles on it when it went.

And also I have the smaller shield I got from CyncySpider and am going to have another 2" removed from the height of it but would like to have another 2010 shield for winter use so I can swap back and forth if anyone has one to sell.

I have the tall windshield, & ride with it almost full up, on most rides. Additionally, I adjust the height based on weather, speed, & location - usually 5 or more times per ride, & am at 60+, 80% of the time.

No cracks on my 2010 RTS

Well, you are lucky. I would have thought that would aggravate the situation. I have my windshield cut down and my bracket cracked and was replaced. I notice it shakes side to side when on back roads (bumpy) I hope my new bracket is stronger?

New pins

I had my 2011 in dealer for some warranty work and told them about the windshield rattle on bumpy roads etc. It has been like that from the start. I now have the 2012 pins installed and windshield does not move or rattle anymore. :)

Mine broke on the way to SpyderFest and the Cowtown guys fixed it while I was there. Rattle was gone for a couple of days and then came back. I guess I will have to change to 2012 pins to get rid of it.

Just thought I'd BUMP this back into current status since we have so many new owners

nojokeDon't get caught by a total failure guys :lecturef_smilie:

All you have to do is take a look at the metal dog-boned shaped casting that raises & lowers your shield before you go on a ryde, just a quick glance is all it takes. If you notice a crack, call your dealer and explain the problem & they should order the new replacement parts under warranty without issue.

On ours, it had a noticeable crack in it for a long time before it totally failed, I just didn't know what to :shocked:look:shocked: for at the time, as not many others had been reported yet. But there have been many of these castings with cracks in them reported and a few total failures as well. It is very noticeable to see. I'm not sure if they have this issue worked out on the newer 12 models or not, but ours is an 11 and it still had it, so just do yourselves a favor and take a look every now and then ;) Hope this helps someone & Happy Spyder'n :2thumbs:

now that its broken...

As you may know (other post) mine broke last week in the middle of our 3000 miles vacations ride, I repaired it with 2 zip ties and it hold still! I am wondering why no-one did a replacement part out of nylon or this green hard plastic as used in car suspensions?? It would filtrate vibrations and offer some lateral flex?? I honestly cannot see how this shaking parts (on 2011 and before) would not break again???

My 2012 rattles a little on bumpy roads... only really noticeable at slow speeds.

Not sure what changes were made to the pins..

windshield rattle

Asked my dealer to order me 2012 replacement pin/bolts for my 2011 because of the shaking when on bumpy roads. I told him I would pay for them if BRP would not cover under warranty. Should be in next week.

Noticed Saterday that the one that was installed at SpyderFest now has a small crack in it. Going to dealer later in the week to have them order another replacement.

Break!

So far I haven't had this problem....but.....I don't have many bumpy roads to go down in my area. Hmmmm....now you guys are gonna make me find some bumpy roads to see if this will happen before the warranty runs out. Or, did they fix the problem on the 2011 RT limiteds? Wondering?:read:

Perhaps a thin layer of electric tape on the pins to 'thicken' them up a bit would help....

I noticed on my way to work that I certainly DO get rattle from the shield system when hitting bumps.... and we have more bumps than smooth roads.....
