• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

The windshield of the RTs are held by three points. Two points are pivot points & the third, which is in the center of the shield, is the dog-boned shaped metal adjustment mechanism that actually goes up & down with the press of your button on the RECC. Its that metal, dog-boned shaped mechanism that is failing, usually with a noticable crack half way thru, before it actually gives, and cracks all the way through. Just keep an eye on yours. If it breaks, a hose-clamp can offer a temporary fix. But ryding with it broke, isn't advisable as the shield is laying on top of your dash, & with any wind turbulance, you'll end up needing a new shield.

Not the pivoting brackets, just the ADJUSTMENT ARM is cracked & broke thru

There is another thread posted on here, where at least 5 or 6 others have broken as well. The shield is held in place by two pivot points, those seem to be fine. In the center of the shield, their is a dog-bone shaped adjusting arm that is attached to a motor on one end & the shield on the other. Its that dog-boned shaped metal arm that will crack & ultimately fail. Others have reported that you can tell it was cracked a while before it actually broke thru. Mine was the same. You could see an old crack along with a fresh crack when it finally gave way. Others have reported it is under Warrantee & at least one other had the motor & complete mechanism replaced. I have yet to discuss it with my shop.

I checked mine this morning after reading your post. (Missed the earlier post on this subject) Mine looks fine, but will keep an eye on it. Warranty runs out in a month. Hope mine doesn't break later on.

I hope the powers that be--"BRP" get "wind"--pardon the pun--of this soon. Hopefully it is not an epidemic--but--time will tell.
 
In the meantime... Has anybody taken any measurements of this piece and considered building one out of something a bit less fragile? :dontknow:

Yes. Mine entire mechanism was replaced with one that had a different part number, but sometimes the new part number might mean the same design from a different vendor.

I'm a bit disheartened, especially now since my clutch went at 18K.

I may see if I can get this arm fabricated out of stainless steel sometime over the winter.
 
Broken Windscreen Bracket

Have yet to get my Broken bracket changed - Taking my Spyder RT - S to the dealer next week

I would also be interested in a Stainless Steel replacement bracket if someone is looking into it - Need to be convinced that the replacement
OEM will not go the same way in the future

My previous motorcycle was a BMW K100LT -Although I could have had the BMW electronic windsheild fitted due to the number of failures these
suffered and the very high cost of replacement parts Motors etc - Decided to stick with the fixed one - Had 2 Screens 1 summer and a winter one
more difficult to change over than the Spyder RT - S

I may in the future look at a fixed windshield for the Spyder and wondered if anyone has manufactured backets as a drect replacement for
the electronic system which would allow mechanical adjustment

Bigred.....you can see the aluminum arm pretty well with the windshield all the way up. Its the one in the middle.
 
Agreed, NO SURGERY NEEDED, just raise your shield all the way up & inspect

WINDOW PART

It appears this part is made of CAST metal of some type and this is probably the main cause of breakage. In forming it ,it becomes very brittle which does not do well in situations were vibrations are involved. This is why they are fatigued and failing. i would not recommend stainless steel it's not easy to work with. i believe ordinary bar stock aluminum would be OK... Mike...:thumbup:
 
Yes to the Crack

Just checked my 2010 SM5 RT and it is cracked. I am in Florida and will keep my eye on it while here and get it into my dealer when I get home. Thanks for letting us know as I would have just drove it till it broke.
 
BRP BETTER LOOK INTO THIS

I can see it coming some day, A class action lawsuit when one fails at 50 plus mph wind and knocks some one off there bike, and or kill the rider and or passenger. I never looked at mine but I will, I have to drive on a ruff dirt road for a mile before I hit pavement and the shield dos bounce around a lot.
 
I checked mine 2010 RT SE5, Looks good no cracks yet 25000 mi on it. Thanks for the heads up.:thumbup:
 
did a rough visual when the weather cleared up at work...
no crack YET. but... I will be keeping an eye on it.
