Warning bike goes into auto pilet, and accellerates itself.

Just to warn others so they keep their right hand ready to tap the E-stop when the bike goes into auto pilot. Jumps from 1st to 3rd, and floors the gas with a message scroll of mission. I applied the brake, and it was over powering the brakes I had the sense to trip the E-stop in those second before hitting the back of a car. It locked itself in 3rd gear I called a buddy, and we pushed it two miles home. As you all know your warranty does not cover towing, and I was not restarting it to have anyone get killed.

Just a warning.:hun:

Yikes! Had that happen to me on a 88 Katana a few years back. :<
(I had only been riding a few months at that time and I was in traffic as well)..

My warranty covers towing.

I'm assuming this is an SE5?

What was the message on the display?

Pushed it 2 miles? By hand? Sorry - I'm not buying it. Don't know anyone with a trailer? Didn't try to restart and ride slow home? That would be quite the task to push a Spyder for 2 miles - especially if stuck in 3rd gear.

If you don't have the BEST warranty that covers towage to the nearest dealer - your Insurance should cover it. I've never had car insurance that didn't cover towing fees. Some pay up front - some reimburse you later.

Please do post what your dealer finds out.

Wow, I have towing with my insurance and i also have towing with my RPM One warranty. I was going to cancel the towing with my insurance but its only $5 extra for the year so I figured I keep them both just in case.

This is a warning my friend, if someone want to discredit me that is ok but I warned

If someone wants to discredit me that is ok, and I do not mind. I have done my best to warn my friends so they have in the head to reacted by hitting the kill button.

Sorry Firefly BRP does not cover towing, and surprisingly it pushed easy locked in 3rd gear. There are still nice people in this world I found out. As I was pushing it before my friends arrived a old lady came out to the street, and asked me if I ran out of gas. That was nice.

No I was not restarting it are you nuts. I may be dumb but I am not stupid.

I swear to God that this is the truth so take this warning.

Maybe it was human error? I have not heard of this before on either the SM5s or the SE5s...

Also, the BEST does cover towing...

B.E.S.T. Warranty will cover towing for a fixed number of miles and the owner is responsible for the remained - I believe it is 50 miles - not necessarily the nearest dealer.

I had this experience and I had to pay $25 tp cover the amount the warranty didn't cover - the tow job was for 75 miles total.

I have towing on my car insurance but not sure about the towing being covered by my motorcycle insurance I wil have to check that to be sure.

I have AAA also it says will cover towing for any vehile I am riding in - I hope they mean on too??? :dontknow: Nice to have back ups.

Duh !!!
Push the spyder??? no not me, can't and won't.
Dialing B E S T if no answer,, Dialing Insurance if no answer, Dial Fire Dept... answer yep.......:joke:

I just got AAA. Had to add motorcyle/RV coverage. Might be a good idea to call them and see what they tell you about your coverage.

I have AAA but don't want to wait all day for them to get around to my vehicle. I prefer to use AAA for all their nice discounts at places, train stations, etc...as far as GEICO goes, I'll have to check with them. The BEST warranty is best for repair work as the 50.00 deductible can cover you for thousands of dollars of needed work...with all the electronics on these bikes, the BEST is really a must have!

Very good advice. A motorcycle should always be shut off with the kill switch, exactly for this reason. It needs to be in your head before you actually need it...just like a fire drill.

The BRP standard warranty does not cover towing. The BEST wararranty does, even before the extended warranty period begins. I have pushed many a wounded bike, sometimes for miles, and would probably have tried the same thing. The centrifugal part of the SE5 clutch would be kicked out, so an SE5 will move readily in any gear when turned off, that's why the parking brake is essential on that model. BTW, there is a way to manually get the Spyder out of gear using a wrench. See your Operator's Guide.

No I was not restarting it are you nuts. I may be dumb but I am not stupid.

You did exactly the right thing with an SE5. No way to prevent disaster if the throttle is still stuck.

I swear to God that this is the truth so take this warning.

I, for one, most certainly believe you. Our Spyder has hung at about 3,700 rpm at least twice, and at lesser rpm many times. It would report this incident to the NHTSA, if I were you. It could be disastrous with a rider that didn't think as fast as you did.

Hey Guys, the regular BRP doesn't cover the towing completely as mentioned, you have to have BEST to get full towing. And I have to tell you Firefly, you may have had towing with all your insurance but it is not automatically included in all insurances. Most insurances I have dealt with, you have to ask to add towing unless you have an agent you have worked with forever and just does it for you. Also, if you only have PL & PD you won't have towing unless you pay extra either. We do not have towing on our policy for our car or for our spyders except thru the BRP BEST.

Never had PL/PD - always had full coverage. While in the past I had AAA - I no longer will give them money since they are very against motorcycles. They lobby against MC's every chance they get and are a major force behind Michigan still having a helmet law---

But I digress.....

The part I wasn't buying was pushing the Spyder 2 miles. 2 blocks maybe - but it just sounds a bit excessive to me. But hey - I was wrong once before----- ONCE. :D

I also believe the proper term would be kill-switch. It's always how I turn my bike on and off - ALWAYS.

Pushed a bike four miles home with a flat rear tire several years back. Took me hours. I'm not sure if I have done anything as silly since. I push the Spyder out of the garage, out of the trailer, and around in the yard to wash it. It would probably be the first thing I would think of, if stranded, even with at least three towing services on my warranty and insurance. It can take hours for a tow vehicle equipped to tow a Spyder could arrive, and if the dealership is closed, you can't leave the vehicle, so you would be forced to pay for a second tow anyway. Bbeen there, done that...I suspect Nater1 has, too. Old habits die hard for us old school bikers.

My Geico policy covers towing of motorcycles. Even had a deal where I didn't want to use the service they were going to send out so they let me call my own tow and all I had to do was send in the tow receipt and they reimbursed me.

.

On the B.E.S.T. webpage (and in my documentation):

"even during the roadster’s limited warranty period.... This service is provided by Road America, a subsidiary of the MAPFRE Group, and roadsters will be brought to the nearest Spyder authorized dealership when towing or for repairs."

But yes, you had to buy the B.E.S.T. plan for this coverage.
