:helpsmilie:Hi! We are new to all this spyder stuff!!! Looking to purchase an RT model of some kind... Had a salesman tell us it should be '14 or newer because of the changes that were made I guess starting in '14 we wanted an older model because this will be the first one... would like real honest feed back because I kind of feel like the salesman was shooting me some BS.....

thanks in advance......

The RTs came out in 2010, and the "wish-Lists" for them started right after that...
Folks griped about wanting more power, better fuel economy, lower cruising rpms, more range between fuel stops, more electrical power, and less heat... :yikes:
(Why did we EVER buy the obvious pieces of crap?? :dontknow: :joke::joke::joke:)

But BRP was listening, and EVERY one of those items was addressed by the changes that were in the 2014 model year RTs...

Happy Shopping! Please let us know what you end up buying!

Thanks!!!!! Haven't found a lot of '14s but will keep looking....👀
When looking for a used Spyder, you may want to look at what has been added along with condition of the body and tires, mileage, warranty. Accessories to look for are Swaybar upgrade, additional lighting, seat upgrade, shock adjusters, cat bypass, etc.. You might come across my '14 RTL. It went to Texas when I sold it.

Agree with the salesman if

within your budget. If not..My first Spyder was a 2010 RT and loved it...for almost 80K and running great when I traded in on my 2014 RTS....and then along came the F3!!! Also know many good reports on the 2012. The Rt is a great cruiser and handles 2 up verrrrry well. Now IMHO the F3 is a sweeeet "sport car"...lots of folks ryde 2 up...if you go that route get their input....you are in the right place for learing all things Spyder. Welcome.

There is nothing wrong with the older Spyders if it is in good condition. They have plenty of power to get you where you want to go. Buying an older spyder is the best way to get into the Spyder world without investing crazy amount of money.

:welcome:
It's not that the pre-14s should be avoided. There's nothing wrong with them, except some known problems that should have been fixed by the dealers. But you'll like the '14 or newer better.

Hi and Welcome to the SPYDER WORLD!!! For what it's worth, this is a 2/16/2017 post by "robmorg" here on a SpyderLovers forum that we ran across while searching for our own rydes. We were going thru the thought process of Used vs New and after reading his post went online and searched for dealers and their inventory. We were amazed to find numerous left over 2015 models offered with fantastic discounts with equally fantastic financing - like 0% for 5 years! We ended up finding two models that fit our needs to a "T," one being a left over 2016 and one being a 2016 Demo with 300 miles of parking lot riding. There deals are out there and thanks to the internet, they're easier to find. Below is the post by "robmorg." Good luck! :2thumbs:

New Can Am Rebates on Left Overs
For anyone out there who still wishes they could trade in their 998 Spyder for one with a 1330 engine, now is your chance. Can Am just announced a rebate program on left-over's running for the next six weeks.... $5000 rebate on 2015 and earlier models; $3500 rebate on 2016 models; OR zero % financing for five years. Fairly attractive offer. Hard to believe that there are many new 2015 models still out there, but I guess there are.

As for me..., as generous as this rebate offer is, it STILL doesn't entice me to trade in my beautiful, highly farkled, cool-running, 2013 RT with the great sounding, high revving, 998 engine. Which means that there is one more left over 1330 out there somewhere for someone else to scoff up.

But hurry! They will move

Depends....

Salesman is gonna sell you what is best for him. Depending on the budget you can go either way. They are both great machines and if you still have spark in your life you will enjoy the High RPM V-Twin as much as I do. Added to the changes made to the RT and F3 is the fact that they have discontinued the RS, RSS, ST and RT V-twins altogether. Something to consider long term. You could start with the older version and see how it goes and easily transition to the new triple. Best solution to your dilema is to test ryde them both....

2014, RT, 1330, three cylinder or later years is the way to go. The 998's were nice--I had four of them. The 1330's are a bit nicer--IMO. I have both and prefer the 1330.

More torque, better gas mileage, and lower maintenance costs. Win, win, win. ST versions, 2010 - 2013 RT, and all GS/RS have the 998 engine. 2014 RT and F3 all have the 1330 engines.

Budget concerns

May dictate that you go even older then 2014. They did for me. I bought a 2012 RTL 998 VTwin. I love it. Does everything I want it to and more. Handles great will run all day long at any legal highway speed in the US with room to spare and haul my junk. I love it. If you can swing a 2014,well newer is always better. If you can't, a low milage 2010-2013 will be great, just get one.

Possible RT Purchase

My wife and I had a 2005 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Peace Officer Edition. We traded that for a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT-SE5. Had we the money, we'd have purchased a 2014 or newer RT Limited in a metallic red. Why? Because from 2014 on, the Spyder's have a three cylinder, 1330cc, 115 hp engine. More torque, quieter, more fuel efficient. And the choice of red, because it's a favorite color. We'll accessorize ours until such time as we can trade up, then transfer what can be transferred from the 2012 to the 2014 or later Spyder. Namely, the Corbin electrically heated seat with a fuel door and rider backrest. But it sounds like your salesman was spot on when he advised you to buy a 2014 or later.

998s ok.

I have a 2013 RTs se5 with the heat mods done dealer. I love v twin 998 sound. wife and i weight close to 500 lbs, she has plenty of power. We have 20000 miles with no problems. I would buy another one in a heart beat. It will run with most stock Harleys.
