Been getting this fault since the fall of 2011. For the longest time just shutting key off and turning back on would clear the fault.
The vss fault went from once in a while to almost everytime I started the bike. The last time I got a 0 gear selection and vss fault, plus when the key was turned on, the tach and speedo needles would only go around about 1/4 of the way, not the full distance as with normal start.
Swapped in a new relay in the front fuse box and it looks like I am good to go.
The first time this ever happened was when the bike had 21000 km on it (about 12000 miles).
