There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. VSS fault C1290 when starting again after a break - anyone else? Ideas?

Hey folks, I have a brand new 2022 RTL. About 3 weeks old.
I get a VSS (C1290) FAULT when I start it back up after riding for about 30 minutes. It seems to crank slow when this happens.
When I first experienced this, I checked the battery cables and they were a little loose.
I thought for sure that was it. I tightened the cables, checked the voltage when not running and when running.
Voltage checks good. About 12V when off and about 14V when running.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow when they open.
Thanks!

IMHO .... not to worry .... the Spyders have a HUGE power draw when STARTING and anything that's not Perfect will cause issues ( why the VSS code is a mystery ).... Great that you checked the Battery  ..... Did you happen to ADD - STAR washers to the Battery terminals when you were checking them .... if not get some when you can and Add them ... Spyders are Shaker's and they do tend to loosen without the Washers ... Also :congrats: & :welcome: .... Mike

Maybe the battery

I agree with trikemurtha.
Spyders are very sensitive to battery charge.
There seems to be a run of bad batteries from Yuasa recently.
DAMHIKT.
With the engine off, your battery should be at least 12.4 volts.
12V just doesn't seem to work.

Hey dbrown. Spurious VSS faults are often caused by low battery voltage. Sounds like your case, since you hear that it is cranking slower.

Some history - Many moons ago, BRP sent out a Service Bulletin (2012-3) reminding dealers that they needed to give batteries an initial charge as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection. (PDI) There is a misconception that the term "Factory Activated" means that the battery is ready for use. In reality, that term only means that the battery has had the acid installed, not that it has had its initial charge. Spyders arrive to the dealer with the acid installed, but not charged.

So, if you will have a long wait time before your dealer can get you in, you can probably fix this yourself. Modern day Powersports machines require modern day tools. Among those, is an electronic battery charger with multiple modes for different kinds of batteries. If you don't have one, purchase a charger with an AGM Battery mode. Set it for a 2 amp charge. Start the charge and come back the next day. It should have auto shifted into the Maintaining / De-sulfation mode by then. That would be sufficienct to perform the initial charge. Take it out and give it a test ride.

Yes, it could also be a defective battery from Yuasa to begin with. That would be a warranty coverage issue. But, most common is an incomplete PDI at the dealer.

Then, to complement it all, invest in a battery maintainer. Use that if the Spyder will be idle for a few days between trips, or more often if you only take short trips. Good Luck.

Thanks for the information. Very interesting!
I just dropped the bike off at the dealer. They said they will expedite. They're thinking the battery as well. Stating that I could have enough voltage but not enough cranking amps.
Hopefully it's the battery and I'll be riding worry free soon.
Thanks for the help!

Took it to the dealer. They replaced the battery and all is well. Voltage was good, amperage... not so good! I guess it's possible to have a bad battery on a brand new bike. Thanks for all the comments!
