• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Volvo's Self Driving Cars

Okay... here's the scenario.

I'm in my drive itself car reading my book and a boy on a bicycle comes out from between two parked cars and is headed straight for my car. With no time to brake safely, the computer has to decide between two options...

Do I swerve into the path of the oncoming truck in the other lane or do I take out the kid on the bike?

Most likely it would choose the option with the less mass to collide with unless it has learned to recognize humans.

I am not a fan of the concept of driverless cars. To many are being driven that way already. And then, how about the cars that don't have computers? :dontknow:

Being someone who loves the drive..and drives my vehicles...and doesn't text while driving...or use my phone while driving, but actually drives my vehicles...I think this is stupid.

Instead of helping those who don't know how to drive, how about concentrate on teaching them how! instead of rewarding their ignorance???

Yes the cars can recognize humans and large vehicles. Trouble is, it comes to a moral decision. Does the car hit the bicyclist and kill him, or swerve into the oncoming truck killing you? Its become quite the debate and it seems many of the programmers are of the 'greater good' mind set.

Sorry, I am not. But let me explain. If I own the car, it should let ME decide how these are decided. IE greater good or self preservation. The autonomous car I own should act as an extension of my decision tree and morals, not someone elses. Until I am at least given the option, I will not own one. Conversely, I would expect public transportation to take the 'greater good' path. Looking at it from a normal car stand point, the driver will almost ALWAYS do what is necessary for self preservation if its recognized. Its instinct, and morals take MUCH longer to process in the human brain.

Back to autonomous cars, at least for highway use, they will be with us later this year. All current Tesla automobiles are getting auto pilot mode for highway use. Likely by 2020 the feature for self driving will be available on many models just like cruise control is now. Purpose built autonomous cars with no manual mode will arrive later and it remains to be seen how long those will take to become mainstream. It will likely be heavily influenced by the insurance industry. Autonomous cars with no manual mode will be MUCH cheaper to insure.

From a pure technology view, I think it is cool that we are getting to this level and beyond. I work as a programmer and love to see these kind of advancements. However, On the other side I can also see the debates on the moral side or just being scared of the technology, most people are when things start taking a drastic change.

 Oh HELL no!

The day that they take the wheel out of my hands; it'll have to be my cold, DEAD hands! nojoke

Big difference between making self driving cars available and outlawing manual driving. The former is coming soon, the latter would take several generations to come about. There will be a mix for many years with the numbers slowly progressing toward the self driving variety leaving the manual drive cars to the enthusiast. Much like manual transmissions for which there is no good technical reason to keep other than there are many of us that LIKE them.
