Valve job or Hose job!

I took my 2011 rts in to the dealer to see what he would give in trade of 2014 rts! The bike has 13000 miles on it! They said it was scheduled for a valve job and I needed a new back tire. Cost about $1,100. I was wondering does that sound right?

That's probably a valve adjustment - and you should be able to tell if you need a new back tire or not. Some have gone 20K or better, others are toast at 8K... Given the prices charged for Spyder services, and BRP pricing, that bill doesn't seem out of line. If it were me, I'd have a Kumo tire installed somewhere else, if it was needed....

From what I've heard around here the valve check is scheduled for 15,000 miles, but most people don't need it done. some have even posted going to almost 30,000 miles without it.

Now anything is possible, but my question would be how do they know or think it needs a valve job if you are just asking for trade value?

How would they know it needs this without opening it up? Sounds fishy to me, but I'm no expert.

There JUST trying to Lower Your Trade In by $1,100 So tell them to take that off the Price of the New vehicle and Skip any freight and prep and they got a deal OR RUN!!!!~nojoke

Hose job. Our 2008 SE5 was traded at 43,000 miles...no valve adjustment needed. Our 2010 RT SM5, at 40,000 miles only had one valve "slightly" off. Look at your rear tire. If it needs replacing, tell the dealer to do it at his cost, AFTER the trade. An auto dealer won't make you pay for new tires before you trade. This guy must think you're one blink from no where. IMHO, find another dealer.

Hard to say..!!

price could be close. Weather you need the work is another thing. Valve adjustments have been done but the majority did not need any adjustment. Sadly they do not adjust the price if they don't actually do any adjusting. The time consuming part is removing the cams and buckets to get to the shims. Then reinstalling shims and buckets and reseting the timing and checking that its all within specs....you can check elsewhere..:dontknow:

The 'Valve Job' (if they actually used that term) is a Hose Job to lower the value of your ride. Even if they were actually referring to a 'Valve Adjustment', it's a Red Herring. Any good dealership knows that virtually all Spyders do not need any valve adjustment at that mileage.

Either way, does not sound like they are on the Up-and-Up.

I had 53,000 on mine when I was getting some other work done under warranty, and had my valves checked at that time and they were all within spec. I now have 96,000 miles on it and still going strong.

The maintenance is at 14500 miles. Is he going to do a the maintenance? Most likely not. The 2011 RTS are easy to sell, it was a good year for the RT's. Tell him that your going to put it on SpyderLovers to sell it first. That's IMHO.

I'd look somewhere else. The dealer already saw your Spyder before you both have even negotiated a price on the 2014.
Like cars, don't even mention a trade in until you have agreed on the price of the Spyder. Once the dealer has given you a price you like (or close to it), then you point out that there will be a trade (or possible, you can always try to sell it on the streets).
The valve adjustment, as mentioned, is not necessary unless it is highly noticeable. As far as the tire goes, they can get that done at their cost because they would need to sell the unit to another customer with a better tire. If you were to spend the $$$ on the valve adjustments and tire, might as well keep the Spyder for a while longer.

When I first read this thread, I too thought hose job. However, upon reflection, the OP says that the dealer said it was "scheduled" to have a valve job. (operative word is scheduled) which I believe is correct. I was scheduled to have a valve job at 14,000, but told my dealer to "pass on it" and do everything else.

Hopefully, this helps.
