use of automoble tires on RT

I'm sure there must have been much discussion on this subject at some time but I can seem to find anything. What experience has anyone had with this? I am disappointed in the milage I have on my original rear tire. (13000) I have 20k on the rear tire of my HD electroglide and still have tread,

I know there are many of you who have opted for automotive tires to replace the BRP recommended tires mostly due to the poor mileage received on the original equipment tires. I got 10,000 on one, 13,000 on another and 14,000 on the third one.

I too was considering going to the automotive market when replacing my most recent tire last week. I discussed it with the dealer, and he called BRP. He was told that for insurance and liability purposes he could not install automotive tires on the Spyder.

It seems that BRP has designed the tires to work with the VSS system and the tread is also part of that design.

I have not heard anyone complain of bad handling issues, or problems with non BRP tires--but would be interested in hearing if there have been any problems.

The big picture that I got out of talking with the dealer, is that non specified tires--will probably be an issue if there are any insurance claims against BRP for handling issues. I believe the no install/non BRP tires is going to be pretty much across the board from dealers--but would like to hear if you are finding that to be different.

I have no reason to doubt what the dealer is telling me--since I have dealt with him for many years. He is the kind of person that would also install an aftermarket tire on his own Spyders--if he could get 50,000 plus miles.

I just changed my back tire, I use a BF Goodrich G Force tire and I love it. It does not scream like the Kenda tire and it is much cheaper. I got 20,000 miles out of it.

Only a particular tread? Is that seriously what they're claiming?

Wow! Forgive my scepticism but if that is the level of intricacy BRP say they have reached in designing their VSS, what part does the road surface play in their calculations? Tarmac? Concrete? Rough or smooth? Worn or fresh? Wet, dry, hot or cold?

Come on, if the tread is such a sensitive issue then the way the tread and the VSS together react to the road has to be a factor. The grip available from such a wide variety of surfaces must play a part in our safety. It obviously does, but do BRP say their warranty is breached if we don't ride on a good tarmac surface? Course not, that would be silly. As silly as saying the grip from a Goodyear tire is inferior to BRP's own brand of rubber.

And how about the loading on the tire? Two heavy people with a month's worth of luggage and at the other end of the scale the skinny guy who goes out for a blast on his Spyder around his local streets? And don't even get me started on tire wear...

Kenda? Well, who are they? Certainly they're not on a par with the giants of the world's tire industry such as Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli, et al, but they are BRP's chosen ones, chosen to produce unique BRP tyres at unique BRP prices, only available from BRP's own unique dealerships and hanging over it all is the threat that if you don't buy them and only them you may infringe your insurance agreement and/or your warranty.

There is an expression to describe this very cosy supply arrangement but I won't repeat it here, enough to say there is a smell around this topic, folks, and it ain't roses. :doorag:

the spyderworld is getting smaller since lamont founded this lovers webside ...

in europe you need a paper from the tire-company - is it allowed to use this typ on your vehicle ... like you see here from toyo (german)
so if its allowed in germany -(you can ryde as fast as you want) - why should there be a problem somewhere else in the world ??
or mabe someone should ask TOYO if this paper says ... use this tire only on european streets ;)

Hey Chris,

Would it be difficult to post a translation of the document from Toyo tires? Looks like it would be very interesting. TIA.

That will be my next tire. As far as BRP's claim...what can I say. To me it's like them wanting for you to use their oil. Never have, never will. If you can get 20K out of a G-Force, I hope to get 30K.

hi Dan - the paper says not more than its allowed to use this tire on
"our spyder" - if I get problems with the ensurance or the police - this is what (each) tire company have to give me if they want to sell me a tire for my vehicle - the only intresting sentence is : they cannot guarantee problems with the ABS if you use different sizes of fiont/rear wheels but there is another paper for that ...
so ask TOYO - USA .. they should give you the same paper in english ..
(here is another one..)

A couple more postings about tires from a different thread.

"we are currently on our way to alaska with two spyder rts one a SE the other a SM running 215/60-15 rears of two different man. and both have more than 10,000mi. running these size tires "0" issues, and both are performing great from Texas to pacific coast now in Bellingham into Canada in the morn. tell service to keep looking, fronts are 175/65-14 also "0" issues, my wifesSM has more than 28,000 mi. now , more than 15,000mi. with this rear size. Good Luck we are off towards fairbanks tomor. Since I still ride Two wheels I can tell you am impressed with the Spyders pulling the trailers up the mountains, gearing is spot on. "

Rear Tire Size Changed - Fault Code Problems
While talking to my dealer's Service Manager, he told me of a Spyder they'd had for about a month and couldn't figure out why it kept throwing about 8 different codes and then go into 'Limp Home' mode. This would happen within about 10 minutes after clearing the fault codes. He said that they had checked & rechecked everything and could find anything wrong.

He was talking to a BRP rep today and was told what to look for: rear tire change.

It turns out that the owner had changed the rear tire to a larger size tire, which threw the rear wheel out of synch with the sensors and the computers.

May be something to consider when deciding on a new tire.
