Upgrading from a 2008 for 2012, some questions about price

I am thinking of trading my 2008 spyder in for a 2012 RT A&C SE5. After paying $2000 over retail and $1500 for the extended warranty I don't plan on taking a financial bath this time. Went to a dealer today and they offered me $5000 trade in on mine. They want to charge me
$20,999 2012 RT SE5 A&C
$80 document fee
450 freight
698 setup
253 license fee
1817.03 tax
1300 extended warranty

I know I can get a better price for the warranty but the 1146 for freight and setup seem a little excessive. Am I missing something or am I being unrealistic?

First off, I would like to thank everyone who responded with the info and opinions. After I posted here I then read the below listed article. If you haven't read it I would recommend it. Very nice and true.

After reading some of the posts, I called three other dealers and all claimed they had to charge destination fees. That varied in terms of cost and all dealers are within 150 miles. Possibly preferred dealers get a different rate.

As far as setup, the dealers said they have to be assembled and the question of billing the set up at customer rate or manufacture rate. One dealer said if I take a tech off to set it up I am losing a guy for customer repairs rate.

Extended warranty and the cost difference. Thanks to Bryce at Berts Megamall (another sponsor) and the price difference between dealers. Something everyone should consider especially after the bath I took on the Western Service extended warranty and a little problem of them not covering the shaft/sprocket.

The process continues. Thanks again to everyone.

That is a thought-consignment. I was expecting $9500 or in that neighborhood. I have seal floor boards, corbin seat, elevated handlebar, 25 inch windshield, passenger extension foot pegs. They had a 2008 with nothing on it and they wanted $14000 (I seem to recall).

In July my dealer allowed me to sell my 2009 RS SE5 in his dealership, I got $14,000. I only had to give the salesman $300. While mine was up for sale I bought from the dealer a 2012 RT-S for $25,000 out the door with four years of warrentee. (2 years BRP and 2 years BEST). This should give you some idea of what you can do. I would not take less than $9,000 for a 2008 trade in and would sell it retail for around $11,000 to $12,500 depending on condition. Not counting any add on's, just for the stock machine.

I have been looking at some of those deals and knowing the cost of that 600 mile service and the 12000 mile valve check does make one to consider.

There have been some pretty good deals on slightly used RTs on this forum lately with extended warranties. If it was my money I would sell here and buy here. I understand some people want to buy new. Just a thought..

The fees for document / dmv seem to be the same at all of the dealers.

I replied on someone else post about the difference in setup between factory and customer setup.

I have a 2012 rts I bought last fall. I would never trade anything in to dealer. That price is low ball to me. They will always play games between your trade in value and the retail value of what you are buying. Sell it privately, and make the dealer hold his rts price. The dealer is going to make several thousand off the trade, plus the extra charges he is charging you on the new rt.

Document fee, sounds like garbage. He is charging you $80 to fill out some forms and register the sale with BRP. Filling out paper is the cost of doing business, tell him to eat it.

Freight I can understand. Same with PDI. Most shops charge 6 or 7 hours shop time to assemble out of the crate. Find out the customer rate and see if you are paying customer rate or dealership rate. It should be cost recovering, not trying to make a buck off you over and above the sale. Most places won't even show you these two costs. They will build it into the price. Your dealer is trying to show you what a great deal you are getting on the as is price of the bike by listing out additional charges.

As for the extended warranty. BRP was offering this free of charge on a promotion on 2012's nationally. I would question that.

Licensing? Why pay a dealer to do that. Save the morning money, get the papers, go to the dmv and do it yourself. Nothing to it. That's what we do up here.

I think the price of the bike is great. I will be surprised if it stays the same when you take the trade out. I know for a fact you are loosing money on yours.

Cheers and good luck.

Talked to one dealer about the issue of moving out the 2012 with the new model year and he said BRP is great to work with in terms of prior year model being in his inventory.

That's right. I forgot about the rebate offer. Not to mention it is a non current year, so perhaps he should show some incentives of his own to get rid of old stock.

For me it is already a 140 mile journey one way to a dealer. One of my questions when at the San Mateo Motorcycle dealership is increasing the number of service centers. I understand that some people have long distances for service but that is a considering factor for me.

Jim, I know it would be a ways for you to go but you could probably get a better deal at either Elk Grove Powersports or at Marina Boat Sales in Lodi. Both can set up a consignment sale of your current Spyder. You can test ride any model they have in stock at both locations also.

I don't think we have talked since the Los Angeles (Hollywood) owners event. Hope you are doing well. Good luck with your new Spyder shopping.

Tom

I had given you a call but didn't hear from you. Not sure if you changed cell numbers. I did call Elk Grove and mentioned that you referred them.

If this is what they are DOING for you NOW.....just wait till you want SERVICE....I would listen to Bandit and they also sell a lot of Spyders on E-BAY......and I'll give you $6000 sight unseen......Mike...

Thank-you for your generous offer. <g>

Not sure about some of the other suggestions about going out of state. California is not very kind when it comes to buying out of state. Let me know if others have a different story?

Like you I have been shopping for a RT to replace our 11 RS SM5. Dealers seem to all drop the same number, 10K in trade. I don't think you mentioned the miles on your 08 but our 11 has 7K miles. I have bought a variety of two wheel motorcycles over the last several years and dealers never want to discuss the "fees" until you are in front of them. We live in an area that has very few dealers just in motorcycles let alone Spyders. We bought our RS at ELK Grove (700 mile round trip) and they were great but when I contacted them about a trade-in, they said 10K on trade and a killer deal on a 12 RT SM5 but it was just the MSRP minus the rebate. They turned out to be one of the higher dealerships. I feel for the dealers, the market is tough right now and they need to make a profit. I just feel that they need to be up front with all the fee's and be reasonable.
