Upgrading from a 2008 for 2012, some questions about price

I am thinking of trading my 2008 spyder in for a 2012 RT A&C SE5. After paying $2000 over retail and $1500 for the extended warranty I don't plan on taking a financial bath this time. Went to a dealer today and they offered me $5000 trade in on mine. They want to charge me
$20,999 2012 RT SE5 A&C
$80 document fee
450 freight
698 setup
253 license fee
1817.03 tax
1300 extended warranty

I know I can get a better price for the warranty but the 1146 for freight and setup seem a little excessive. Am I missing something or am I being unrealistic?

In July my dealer allowed me to sell my 2009 RS SE5 in his dealership, I got $14,000. I only had to give the salesman $300. While mine was up for sale I bought from the dealer a 2012 RT-S for $25,000 out the door with four years of warrentee. (2 years BRP and 2 years BEST). This should give you some idea of what you can do. I would not take less than $9,000 for a 2008 trade in and would sell it retail for around $11,000 to $12,500 depending on condition. Not counting any add on's, just for the stock machine.

Personally, I don't think that they're doing you any favors on that deal. If it were me, I'd do a little more shopping around. You should be able to get a better deal on a 2012, in my opinion.

There have been some pretty good deals on slightly used RTs on this forum lately with extended warranties. If it was my money I would sell here and buy here. I understand some people want to buy new. Just a thought..

I have a 2012 rts I bought last fall. I would never trade anything in to dealer. That price is low ball to me. They will always play games between your trade in value and the retail value of what you are buying. Sell it privately, and make the dealer hold his rts price. The dealer is going to make several thousand off the trade, plus the extra charges he is charging you on the new rt.

Document fee, sounds like garbage. He is charging you $80 to fill out some forms and register the sale with BRP. Filling out paper is the cost of doing business, tell him to eat it.

Freight I can understand. Same with PDI. Most shops charge 6 or 7 hours shop time to assemble out of the crate. Find out the customer rate and see if you are paying customer rate or dealership rate. It should be cost recovering, not trying to make a buck off you over and above the sale. Most places won't even show you these two costs. They will build it into the price. Your dealer is trying to show you what a great deal you are getting on the as is price of the bike by listing out additional charges.

As for the extended warranty. BRP was offering this free of charge on a promotion on 2012's nationally. I would question that.

Licensing? Why pay a dealer to do that. Save the morning money, get the papers, go to the dmv and do it yourself. Nothing to it. That's what we do up here.

I think the price of the bike is great. I will be surprised if it stays the same when you take the trade out. I know for a fact you are loosing money on yours.

Cheers and good luck.

I have never paid Freight or Prep on 14 BRP products and 2 Spyders. Walk away FAST!!!
You should get a 2012 RT A&C for about $19,000 Plus Tax and License with the $2,000 rebate STILL being offered!!
Accept No Less than KBB and NADA value on your trade or sell privately.

That's right. I forgot about the rebate offer. Not to mention it is a non current year, so perhaps he should show some incentives of his own to get rid of old stock.

Jim, I know it would be a ways for you to go but you could probably get a better deal at either Elk Grove Powersports or at Marina Boat Sales in Lodi. Both can set up a consignment sale of your current Spyder. You can test ride any model they have in stock at both locations also.

I don't think we have talked since the Los Angeles (Hollywood) owners event. Hope you are doing well. Good luck with your new Spyder shopping.

This guy is just screwing you, pardon my "french". Tell him to shove it where the sun don't shine and go somewhere else.

THIS DEAL

If this is what they are DOING for you NOW.....just wait till you want SERVICE....I would listen to Bandit and they also sell a lot of Spyders on E-BAY......and I'll give you $6000 sight unseen......Mike...

I would suggest you get a quote from Louispowersports...... they are out of Texas and are also on ebay. CALL THEM they are good to talk to. Take your quote to your local dealer and see if they will match or come reasonably close to the Louis' quote. That is what i did and my local dealer come within $25. For $25 it wasn't worth having to wait a month or so to have it delivered to Idaho from Texas. BTW I also included $900 estimate shipping cost in the quote prior to taking it to my local dealer.
Good luck and keep us posted on your decision.
Waiting for the roads to clear of snow nice day for a ride....... it's finally a bit above freezing today.

Better Deal

I just called LEISURE LIFE SPORTS, in Omaha Ne, They have been a dealer 4 1/2 years, and they have about 8 or 9 SPYDERS on hand now, I heard they will deal.

Otter's right... He's trying to steal your bike and unload a leftover for way too much coin...
He's screwing you, and you're buying the grease! :yikes:
And what's with all of those fees????? :gaah:

Like they said above. They are trying to steal your 08 :spyder2: for $5,000--it should be worth at least double that. To top it off, they are also packing on the charges on the new :ani29:. I would recommend going elsewhere also.

Last week I decided to trade my 2008 GS (manual trans.) stock unit in on a 2013 Triumph Street Triple R and my dealer (who does not normally sell Spyders, so doesn't have a clue what market he may have) offered $11,000 trade in - just out of Blue Book, I think. I was happy and he was happy. I then pay suggested retail on the new bike and add whatever mods I want at a 10% off list. You're not being offered much a of deal IMHO.

When we purchased our two 2009RS we did not pay for assembly or shipping. When they were traded in May 2011 for 2011's in las Vegas for an RT and RTS we were allowed $13,000 on each at that time there was no assembly or shipping charges. I took care of the registration myself in another state at which time I paid sales tax it was very simple all the dealer did was gave us temporaries to leave the state. We purchased an additional 6 yr. Warranty since the bikes has so many computers the cost was approximately $1300.00 each
