• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. I sold my 2013 RT and Bought the new 2014. Any thing special I need to know about the breakin of the 2014?:D

:congrats: Everything that you loved about your last ride; you'll REALLY love about the new one!
And the stuff that might have needed some improvement; they nailed!! nojoke
Try shifting at about 2700 rpm or so; these engines are "torquers", and don't need the sane rpm levels as the 998s. :2thumbs:

Thanks Bob

Picked it up Saturday in the Rain, trailered it home, riden three times, and Love it. The sound takes a bit of getting used to. Using the ECO Mode during break in, I guess this is good?

Yeah..!!

follow the manual to the best of your abilities. It's all there...but mostly relax and enjoy the totally new ryde...:2thumbs: but if you can't just don't cruise on the freeway at a constant speed for long periods. Vary speeds and rpm's for a good 600/1000 miles...:ohyea:

Check you fluids before riding

On mine and my wife's RT-Ss we noticed the oil going down during break-in.

Also, your first service is around 3000 miles. MUCH longer that the first service on your previous spyder! :)

A lot of us do not like the ECO mode. It affects the power band and only saves a mile or two per gallon. A lot also find the green arrow telling you when to shift to be a bit distracting.

Shifting at 2700 to 3000 is a good range on the upshifts. I let the 1330 shift down on its own.

As mentioned, you will like the 1330 a lot compared to the 998.

:congrats:

2014 RT engine break in hints

I sold my 2013 RT and Bought the new 2014. Any thing special I need to know about the breakin of the 2014?:D

This is the method I have used for every motorcycle & the 3 Spyder RT's I have owned.
The key seems to be roll on throttle, then let engine decompression slow you down, during 1st 100+ miles or so.
Engine decompression is what seems to seat oil rings properly.
All my MC & Spyder RT's (2014 Spyder RT-S SE6 now 14,000 miles) do not use oil & have had good torque/hp.
I changed oil & oil filter at 2,000 miles on my 2014 RT-S and put in a good motorcycle Synthetic oil (I use Amsoil 10w-40 now).
Don't lug engine below 2,500 during break-in.
Engine tolerances are so exact in today's engines that break in is not a big deal.
Enjoy your 2014 RT-L; the 1330 cc in line triple engine has awesome torque & power (as you already feel).

Get a laser alignment.
Your alignment may be OK from the factory, but odds are it isn't.
Getting a laser alignment early saves you a lot of tire problem down the road.

In my opinion, ECO mode is a waste. In fact, I think it might even pose a small danger because you spend so much attention looking at the console instead of the road. Nevertheless, I don't think it will adversely affect your break in.

Other than that, BRP has hit a home run with the 2014 RT.

As always, my free advice comes with a double your money back guarantee.

In my opinion said:
As a newbie I found the ECO mode helpful in getting used to the 1330's power after many years off motorcycles. I have gotten now to the point where I don't worry about watching for the shift points but tell mostly by engine sound. JMO.

Oil changes suggested at about 10K, but I'm doing 5K (5000 miles).

New rear tire every 5K.

New front tires something over 10K (but I'm doing them at 10K since I go in every 5K miles).

Yes, you'll pay for that extra performance in maintenance, but it is worth it.

No valve adjustment, which will help to set off the tires.

As others have said, there is also a different shifting pattern, and vary the RPM's in the first 500 miles or so.

Using the eco mode during the break in is an easy way to get used to the new lower rpm shift points.. After 25000 miles I still use the eco mode when I am in a lazy mood

You can eliminate the tire issue by switching to car tires. I now have 10,000 miles on my Kuhmo rear tire and it looks like another 10,000 left in it.
The stock fronts have 16,000 miles on them and I will replace them with Federals at some point.
