Unusual Inquiry: CHILD HELMET QUESTION

Just curious if anyone here has had any experience with the HJC helmets for children, the YOUTH version of HJC's helmets.

I've seen the HJC CL-Y helmets which are rather nice helmets, however if the Large size (they don't make an XL in that helmet) is borderline in fitting my grandson, which helmet would be the next one UP for a Youth!?!?!?!?!

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

I have had the hjc youth helmet, fine.

If it is not big enough, I suggest you get the lightest weight adult helmet in a size that fits. Our grandson is now in adult helmets, age 10. Full face of course...

Agree...

:agree: usually when you max out the youth/child sizes you go to the xs adult sizes then on up...

The shell on the Large Youth helmet is quite a bit smaller than the Adult XS. Though I know there is a break-in period, I just don't want to buy another helmet next year.

What are your thoughts on the difference in shell size....did it ever present a major problem for you?

When it comes to helmets, fit is of the utmost importance. You don't want the helmet falling off in the event its needed. As long as it meets the required standards--you should be good to go.

It's just I don't want to buy a helmet that is borderline too small and have to turnaround and buy another one next year. :sour:

Re shell size - not all brands are the same - some have 3 shell sizes so XS is the same shell size as M or even L - some have more so XS and S share a size. For a youth, light weight is equally important as neck muscles are still developing.

I have used a hjc youth helmet (I have a small head) and now have bell Rs-1 in XS - love it, and of course bell sell liners (Pads) in S size for the same helmet. Other brands do this too, so worth looking, to save changing helmets as youth's head grows.

I don't know if they are made/available any longer, but there used to be pads that you could use to adjust the helmet fit. I used them when I had to adjust the fit for my son. Dale

Motocross Helmet?

Since he will be growing like a weed, I doubt you will be going fast or long distance so how about a motorcross helmet? He will be behind you so no worry about the bill catching too much air. They are DOT, cheap and kids like all those wierd/cool colors.

just a thought
