There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Unknown part after oil filter change 2012 SM5

I changed my oil and oil filter today, and realized I had this extra cylindrical mesh piece that isn't mentioned in the manual (see photo). It came out when I removed the old filter. Any ideas where it's meant to sit? Thanks.

Interesting. ...

I have an RS 2012 sm5 and have not run across one of those. There is a similar one but threaded into the oil tank could it have come from the filter..? Don't see it on the parts list either. Could it have come from some other machine you worked on..? Gotta say it looks foreign to our engine... gonna do my oil next week and will look about...

Has anyone else ever worked on your Spyder, Peter?? A lot of the motorcycle shops or performance shops here in Oz add those whenever they work on a motor, putting them in as a 'filter of last resort' device to save your motor if there is ever any loose bits circulating in your oil - or fuel, the diesel & injector pump places put finer versions of them in the fuel inlet cos it's so expensive to re-build an injector pump!!

Why you may ask?? Well, Some oil filters have been known to have their elements fail &/or break down (usually cheapies or OE stuff, but sometimes quality aftermarket gear too) so that the oil ends up circulating little bits of broken down & dirty oil filter element around the engine, & a mesh trap like that is the last resort to stop that sort of crud getting in to & damaging the really expensive bits..... much like the magnet on your sump plug is the last resort to stop small iron filings circulating & ripping the guts of the main bearings & clutch etc to shreds!! These things normally get inserted into the hole in the middle of the oil filter with the pocket end set to catch anything bigger than a pin head getting into the engine -or when they are used for fuel injection systems, they go into the hole under the inlet banjo on the fuel pump.

If you haven't re-assembled everything yet, it won't hurt you or the engine to clean it in petrol & dry it before putting it back into the oil filter; but if you've finished the job this time, it (probably) won't hurt not being there at all, you could pack it away & save it for next time if you like, or if you prefer you could send it to me, I'll find a use for it! ;)

I give done oil changes on the same type of bike that does not go into the oil filter most likely it was added your new filter will not use it

Peter is dead on. Someone added the oil filter screen at some point as a safety feature. I'm going to guess they heard about the old style BRP filters that were known to come apart during an extended service interval and we're a bit nervous.
Likely an unnecessary bit now that the filters have been updated, but won't hurt anything to continue to use it either.

THAT SCREEN

I have not seen that in an OIL FILTER .........however it looks a lot like the screen in the OIL RESERVOIR TANK ..... .imho........Mike :bbq:

Oops my model is actually 2013, not 2012. Thanks for the responses!

Yeah I had the first service done at the shop. I ended up inserting the mesh into the oil inlet orifice (the top left hole in the photo), the size was a perfect fit. I couldn't find where it sits in the filter itself. I've started the engine and it seems fine. Hopefully there are no moving parts behind the orifice!
