• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

UNKNOWN 2012 RT SE PROBLEMS

I love all the information i have gotten off of this site, but alot of the problems have to do with 08,09,10 or 11 spyders and most seem to be with other than the RT. I just purchased (two months ago) my first spyder. a 2012 RT SE is now a permanent fixture in my garage. Can anyone tell me what improvement they may have made on the 2012 model? My only dealer (60 miles away) is no help. Sometimes I feel like a hypochondriac. Every time I hear of a problem I run out to see if I have the same problem. Most of the time I can't even find what they are talking about. things like a guard on the belt--Mine looks like it came with one on it stock. Do I still need one? :gaah:So Confused. Just read an old post on pluging in the battery tender I just purchased--Now i'm afraid to touch it--I hav no idea where i should hook it up. everyone is talking about pigtails and wires---mine has two clips. I want to be able to hook and unhook it quickly so it i cant ride it for a week, fine, but i don't want to take 30 min to unhook and re-tupperware half the bike if i want to go for a spur of the moment ride...ok so its late and i'm board and prob just rambling so better go But if anyone feels my pain a comment would be appreciated:pray:,

the belt guard you can buy at spyder pop .com it worth all of what it cost. it will save your belt.fifth.jpgIMG_3590.jpg

If you have two clips do this:
Remove the red plastic cap off of the terminal marked with a big plus sign.
position the red clip on there.

Position the black clip on the bolt marked with a minus sign.

Easy-Peazy lemon squeezy.

Spydercoach --
i do the same as Rattigan_Roger stated. I just use the alligator clips for the battery tender.
For my Gerbing heated vest, however, I am going to instal a direct hook up.

And to clarify a little, the connections for the clips are under the seat. There are pigtails available that hook directly to the battery that give you an easy hook up.

Coach:

Just enjoy your Spyder and ride it as it came. You can make all the mods you want at some later date.

We are now on our second set of RT's and have never added belt guards and both belts looked fine when checked for the 9,000 mile service on our 2012 Spyders last month. I have a battery tender but I use it to keep the batteries on our electric gate topped up when the sun doesn't hit the solar panel often enough. I have never used the battery tender on any of our Spyders and they have always started up right away (they are kept in a heated garage though). If you feel you must have a tender then get the 12 volt socket attachment and just plug it into the outlet in the back case. It is full power all the time, will bleed back into your battery and can just be unplugged when you want to ride.

All that other stuff like heat blockers, wind wings, extra lights, etc. are nice to have but take your time, enjoy the rides, meet other Spyder riders and then decide what you want to add to yours.

What they said above about plugging in the battery tender. I always use the alligator clips.

RE: Belt guard--I have replaced a couple belts because of getting stones caught in the teeth of the belt. I try to stay off gravel roads up here. For peace of mind though--the belt guard is a good item for sure.

I would not worry about problems unless they specifically happen to your spyder. There are more trouble free ones than those that are having problems.

Enjoy the ryde.

Our first Spyder, a 2008 SE5, was purchased new and rode it 43,000 without ever having disabling issues that left us stranded on any trip (we had one trip that lasted 7.5 weeks and 13,624 miles). We traded for our present 2010 RT SM5 which now had 32,500 miles without any disabling issues. I have no electrical or mechanical mods and will never have any. I read SpyderLovers daily to stay informed about issues, good or bad. I don't worry about warranty issues or anything I cannot control. Life is way too short at 68 to get nervous about things I cannot control.

This: If you don't know what you're doing, the more things you add to your Spyder, the more points of potential failure you are introducing. Let a knowledgeable dealer or installer do it, or leave it stock and just ride the thing.

Re Battery tender.

I have had our 2010RT for 8 months now including a period of storage for 9 weeks whilst on a overseas vacation. I did remove the fuse from the alarm so effectively restored the battery drain to standard & OPTI started first turn of the key after 9 weeks. Not really sure why the need for a battery tender on a modern machine.

Just enjoy the unique experience that is the Spyder.

Cheers from Sunny New Zaland

Just enjoy your ride, be safe and keep reading this forum and our SPYDER families will help tou along the way:congrats:
