• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

uh oh stripped drain plug

So was your dimple plug to blame?
I also have a plug that just spins. Except mine is the other plug.
Not sure but when i put something between the head and used a. Inpact wrench to slowly take it out only half came out. From now on i will let the dealer do it.

Who's your regular dealer ?
Who didn't want any part of the repair ?

Do I understand you correctly ? The drain plug is mounted in the clutch cover, and replacing the clutch cover gave you a new drain plug mount ?

This has been a very informative and educational thread. Great responses from people who know what they're talking about. It sucks that this happened to the OP, but at least he got it resolved. I was not aware that the right side drain plug went into the replacable clutch cover, I thought it went straight into the block.

BTW, I use the same torque wrench as Drew and jaherbst. Been using it for as long as I've been working on my own motorcycles. :ohyea:

Wow $781. So sorry to hear, thats a lot of money. I am starting to think I can not afford my can am.

Kenn
Well thats not something that has to be done unless you strip. Your threads .

From now on i will let the dealer do my oil changes and check everything else at the same time . Its only once a year .

to late now but for future advice

To late now, but for future repairs. Just go to the next size up in plug size. Drill and re-tap to the next size up plug. No need to buy a whole cover when this would do it. Sorry you had this happen, expensive.

I just paid $1071....I think you got a good deal. My parts alone were over $500 with 5 hours of labor.
Also my plug snapped. But with the cover in place myself and the dealer thought it was a stripped plug.
It wasn't until the cover came off that you could see the plug was in 2 pieces.
So either the dealer torqued the crap out of it or the plug was faulty.
I'm thinking a faulty plug cause I would think the threads would strip b4 the plug would snap in 2 but who knows.

which plug broke the big one with the rubber washers or the little one?
was it a dimple plug?
mine was the little one
Leon

my dimple plug broke in half right at the magnet end inside, I think some of them might be defects have to wait and see if anyone else has the same problem. I went back to the OEM plug.
Leon
That is the same spot my dimple plug broke.
I spoke with Richard with dimple plugs and he insists the plug was over torqued which caused the break.
I am also back to using the stock plug.

It sounds like Dimple plugs might have a weakness if over torqued. The problem is that many people are not going to be careful enough while torqueing or their torque wrench might be off adjustment enough for this to happen.

The 'fix' appears worse than the symptom.

I have not had a problem with the stock plugs and I do a lot of oil changes for folks. Just lucky I guess, I'll have a bugger of one this weekend now that I have said this.

when I put mine in had my wrench set at 15 Lbs and it loosened up as soon as it got snug, (or I thought it loosened but it was broken) never reached 15 lbs so it wasn`t over torqued

I was going to ask you who put them in for you as soon as I got home tonight and you already answered my question.
The dealer put my dimple in at 3000 mile service. When another dealer did the clutch cover repair they installed the factory plug. I even told them I have another dimple in the glove box. After the fact I'm so glad they used the factory plug.
Now I'm kinda scared with the dimple that is still in use in my Spyder. Not worried now cause it's not leaking but worried when time comes to take it out.
