Two issues with ST Limited

Could anyone tell me if it is normal to have to pay to have the front cylinder spark plug replaced after 4500 miles due to running too rich? I never had to pay to have any spark plugs replaced on my HD that I had for 10 years let alone on a bike that is 4 months old.

Also, just a FYI for ST owners.... My belt guard nuts vibrated off and the plastic guard was sucked into the belt causing all kinds of problems. The nuts were not the locking type. Now my bike is in the shop and it does not seem to be an in and out type of fix.

Many dealers will not warranty spark plugs. Those that do eat the cost as a goodwill jesture. What you really need is a dealer that will correct the problem, which is probably a bad plug wire but could be a bad coil, ECM, or O2 sensor. The Spyder engines run very lean. Fouling a plug is an indication of a deeper problem.

The Federal emission warranty covers spark plugs and spark plug wires among others....5 years or 18,641 [30,000km]
Whichever first occurs... it's in the book''

Are you talking about the plastic cover that has 2 bolts with nuts on back and 1 bolt up front that screws into the swingarm and covers the bottom of the belt area ? If so ,the bolts in back DO have self locking nuts. If yours didn't then something was wrong. Did you purchase the spyder new? How did you know they were not self locking? I would have thought that if they were to come loose the nut would have been thrown out.

I just put my cover back on yesterday so I am positive that they are self locking. And I will add that they are quite hard to get to also.....

No, I am talking about the plastic belt guard that bolts on with two nuts and covers a small area on top of the belt area to the left side. It would be above the area where the vehicle information is listed and kind of under the saddlebag area. I have a couple of photos that I will upload if I can figure out how to do it..(it has been awhile) I know that they were not locking because when I took the bike back to the shop they gave me an STS as a loaner and it did not have the locking nuts, either. The tech told me that he was going to make sure that he replace them all with the locking nuts. Oh...and yes, I bought the Spyder new.

Photos attached....Belt guard attached with non locking nuts

pic5.jpgpic1.jpgHere are the photos of the belt guard and the area. I have other photos, but don't think you will need others to understand what I am making reference to.

I had the same cover come loose on my ST. The plastic didn't show any signs that there were ever any bolts in it. Dealer replaced it no problem. Hasn't come loose again. It did scare, the you know what, out of me when it came loose at highway speed.

OK that is the top cover. I never pulled that one. However I will be pulling it off in 15 minutes since this was brought to my attention. I knew the bottom had locknuts. These appear to be cap nuts. Mines fixing to get an extra dose of locktite.

Sent from my Galaxy S3. I may have made a spelling error or may have some grammer issues. My fingers are way to big to type on this tiny screen!

I have no idea exactly when it happened. While on my way home from Spyderquest, I felt a snap / jerk and thought that one of my plastic links broke. I stopped and checked under the bike, but could not see anything. Then felt the same thing again. We checked all over the bike, but with the saddlebags on the area was kind of hidden. Then I kept thinking I was hearing and feeling something, but I ride with a fullface helmet and the wind noise was so loud that it was difficult to hear. Days later it was driving me crazy. I took my helmet off and rode around a parking lot. That is when I spotted the chewed up guard wedged between my back shock and my tire. I took the saddlebags off and removed the guard. I then saw melted chewed up pieces around the belt and fender. Talk about being bummed out....

Hmm....I need to check mine too. Thanks

Mine has had a lite gray powder around the belt area since new (400 miles) and I wondered if it was rubbing something, it the belt was wearing/breaking in, or if it was just normal?

BELT GUARD

I had the same thing happen on my ST-S. I just happened to notice it when I took off my lower guard to adjust my belt tensioner. There it was, sitting against the front sprocket in pristine condition. I had just returned from a 500 mile trip the day before.:yikes: I went to the hardware store and bought two bolts and self locking nuts and put it back on.

when I purchased my Spyder in Missouri ...got it home in Texas...Mark took it apart and found 7 screws and bolts missing all on the left side....then the wire under the back fender was not tie-wrapped and had worn through to bare wires....from day one there have been problems with this ST....BRP needs to step up

Had pretty much the exact same experience. Dealer ordered me new parts and I installed the new cover using nylon self locking nuts. No problems now after 1500 miles..

I checked mine and it has the same cap nuts, I'll be pulling to locktight also just in case. No side bags so it's right there in your face.

Missing Belt Guard Bolt

... My belt guard nuts vibrated off and the plastic guard was sucked into the belt causing all kinds of problems. The nuts were not the locking type.

Sorry this happened to you, but thank you for pointing this out. Mine was missing one of the bolts and it was well on its way to coming off.

We had good luck with our ST Limited.........

The ST Limited my buddy rode down to Sonora, California for the Spyder in Redwoods Meet last August never had any issues. He logged about 6,500 Kms. altogether including some break-in mileage plus a side trip SFO.

Guess he was just lucky.... espcially considering he and his girlfriend + personal packing weighed way over 500 Lbs! I personally had about two weeks of saddle time on the ST Limited myself after the trip
and loved the way it handled and rode. It seems to fit me and my riding style a lot more than the RT Limited I have. :opps:

My bad, now I just pulled the trigger on a Circuit Yellow STS.
Hope to pick it up next Thursday. Wish me luck that I won't have bad experiences with it. :ohyea:

Don't get me wrong......I LOVE the bike and have never had so much fun riding...I just don't like the problems. Never had a bike that spent this much time going back to the dealer. Think BRP needs to "step up" it's Quality Control program a bit.
