There should be no reason for an "alternative " . If you are not doing anything wrong then you shouldn't
get shot . If the bad guy knows you aren't going to kill him and he has a gun do you think he won't try to kill the cop ? When you want to engage using deadly weapons you know the consequences .I'm pretty sure no cop wants to kill someone but not so sure the other way around . The alternative may work in certain conditions but when a split second could mean getting killed then firepower is the alternative .

Then spend the rest of your life supporting him and his family when he sues you.

i remember years ago, a man held up a bank. he took the money and shoved it down the front of his pants. when the dye pack blew up, it blew off his testicles. they found him and locked him up. when in jail he brought a law suit against the bank for the medical damage it caused to him. i don't remember the outcome
