Turn signal flashes at different pattern

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, as well as new to the Spyder world. I just purchased my RSS 2012 for about 2 months now. I'm stepping into moddings. The first mod I had was the front fender's LED with turn-signal intergrated. This is what I will have question in a little bit here. The second mod was the strobe light intergrated to the brake when it is applied. The strobe lights are inside tail-light housing. Y'all will probably ask me if I could take pictures, which I will.

OK, here come the question: when I installed the LED on the fenders and have the signal connected to the manufacturer's signal, the left and the right work differently. Question is why?

When I turn on the left signal, it goes like this: on bright - off - on bright - off - ...
When I turn on the right signal, it goes like this: on bright - on low - on bright - on low - ...

Does anyone have any problem like this before? If you do, I'm all ears on how you had it fixed.

Thanks,

-Brad

:welcome: That's a good question for one of the technical people. Some kind of wiring issue I am going to guess--but cannot give you a good answer. Someone will come on soon with an answer I am sure.

I thought about the polarity as well, but haven't got time to open it all up again to check on it. Will do tonight and report tomorrow.

Thanks,

Are you talking about the Fender Tips? When I first installed mine, there'd be times when I'd get erratic turn signals-- they'd flash at normal speed sometimes, but then every so often they'd flash really fast in a strange pattern. Turned out that the wiring on my left front fender was getting snagged (I didn't zip tie it with enough slack), and eventually it tore out, had to replace it.Maybe check/re-check the wiring and re-set your posi-tap connections?

Recheck your installation procedures or steps.I"m sure you'll get it right.

My first question would be, are these lights specifically for a Spyder? There are many here who have created problems for themselves by using lights that don't agree with the CanBus, especially brake lights. Other than that, I agree with RR, check polarity, check for good connections.

It can also greatly depend on how/where you have them wired to, as I can think of a couple possibilities beyond simple polarity.

I don't really understand LEDs too well, but I thought they would not light at all with the polarity reversed? :dontknow: If that is not the case, it is possible, since some Spyders have had the polarity and wire colors reversed at the connectors on occasion.

If you connected to the running lights as well as the turn signals, the right side is working properly. In that case, look for a bad connection on the left...or a bad LED set.

LEDS are one way, and yes if you hook up a single LED backwards then it will not light.
But of late manufacturers are are packaging two LEDs per package, opposite polarity.
Then you hook up a bunch of them and it doesn't matter if the polarity is reversed because they appear to light.

Now as to the OP
I'm wrong - hooked up backwards or forwards it doesn't matter.

Upon thinking about it the side that gets Bright then Dim (not off) must have a bias current and it probably is coming from the running lights.

Haven't got time to work on it last night. But tracing back to what I've done on installing this, I had both side connected the same way. I even had the volt meter tested.

Definitely will have it opened tonight and work on it. I can't stand the feeling of half-a$$ job.

Thanks,

:welcome: Glad you found our little corner of the web!

There's some good people here trying to figure out how to fix the bright-dim issue.

Hang in there! There has to be a solution.

I check on the wires and everything but couldn't find out where I had it wrong. So, I gave Custom Dynamics' tech support a call and turned out that one of the modules they sent me was malfunction. They are sending me a replacement. Yay...

The tracking number shows that it'll get to me this coming Wednesday. I'll let everyone know how it turns out after I get it installed.

Probably a good time for me to install the strobe on the bike too.

Glad Custom Dynamic stepped up and did the right thing for you.

Yup, there's always one more thing that needs to be installed. Let the farkeling begin!

Got the part from Custom Dynamics, switch it with the one they sent before. Works like a charm.

Sent the bad part back to Custom Dynamics.

Thanks Custom Dynamics,
