• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Turn Signal Auto Cancel not functioning

All of a sudden my turn signal auto cancel function is no longer working. I can turn the signals off after a turn by depressing the turn signal switch but it is so much nicer when it shuts itself off. Any suggestion on how or where to start looking to diagnose the problem ?

OK I figured out what my problem was.....user error. It appears that when I decided to fill my handle bars with BB's to reduce handlebar vibration as suggested here on spyderlovers that there is a small hole in the handlebar (I assumed it was a solid pipe with no openings) that allowed some BB's to get inside the multifunction switch housing. The hole is used by the multifunction switch housing to set a small plastic registration pin to stop the switch housing from rotating around the handlebar. Unfortunately for me this hole is large enough to allow BB's to exit the handlebar and enter the switch housing thus causing the turn signal switch to sometime not work mechanically or get stuck in one position which in turn sends a mixed up turn signal command to the gauge cluster which according to the shop manual then does what is necessary to carry out the turn signal command.

Boy do I feel like an idiot !!!

Thanks for that input So far so good with mine, but good to know. Is there a way to plug the hole before this happens? I wouldn't think you're an idiot, I am the one who posted the BBs working!

Fastfraser I did my aux lighting exactly the way AtaDude did his.

I ran power from my aux fuse block to a waterproof toggle switch mounted just below and to the left of the gauge cluster. From the switch I ran two wires (one to each light for power) with the return wire from each light grounded at the grounding lug on the main frame rail. The switch is a 20A rated switch and I have fused the aux lighting line at 15 amps. So far it is working quite well other then the scare that I may have "done something" to screw up the turn signals when I did the BB mod in the handlebars.

Note to self.....do one mod at a time....test....then move on to the next mod !!!

I'm honored.

BTW, I'm using one of your ideas, too. I have 30 Dzus fasteners (black, 14mm) setting here to install. Some interior (house) remodeling got in the way of installing for a few days.

I would think the best way would be to apply tape over the hole from the inside, while you have the grips off. You should be able to place a piece of duct tape in there on a dowel or similar object, and stick it down. You could probably do the same with a blob of silicone on a stick, too, but there would be a wait until it hardened. From outside, you might be able to use silicone, but it may push out when the locating pin goes in, especially if you let it harden first. If I used tape on the outside, I would use a very thin, flexible one, like the aluminum tape for heating ducts. Another alternative woiuld be to insert a rolled up piece of relatively stiff, thin plastic (like part of a milk jug). This would unroll and hold itself in place. Unfortunately for Dudley, the internal fixes would require BB removal first.

I put the bb's in a nylon sock and then shoved it in the handlebars. I wanted to make it easier to remove the bb's when and if I put the risers on my wife's Spyder.

BBs are carcinogenic and dangerous to use...

Okay, maybe not...

As far as auto shut off turn signals, I've never paid attention to mine...not sure if they work or not...will have to check...can we check this in the garage? Just put on the blinker, turn the wheel all the way left or right, and then back to the middle?

According to the shop manual the signals will get cancelled by one of two variables. The first is when the steering angle sensor detector detects that the handlebars have been turned a set amount and if this is not the case then after a 30 second timer has elapsed (page 392).

What if rather than BBs, you used slightly larger lead shot fishing weights. :dontknow:

These come in many sizes and I'm sure ones that were too big to fall in the hold could be found no problem.

Magic man thanks for the idea. I never thought of using fishing weights but you are correct these are large enough that they wouldn't get through the small hole !!
