• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I did not keep any secrets. In a previous topic details and photos were posted. As I mentioned, cost is very low but difficult to do. This scares away others. I was honest stating a difficulty of 5 on a scale of 5.

Secret was likely the wrong word to use, I apologize. No malaise was intended. Personally i just felt the job was not that difficult. No bending stooping or crawling like what's required to do a 9k service. I even added additional support to the contact points of my strut(s) by using fender washers, which required slight alterations. I know there are some folks (not necessarily here) that quiver at the sight of a screwdriver. I believe spyder owners don't generally fit in that category. I'd saved the links I posted to my list of favorites files so I can easily recover them and share them with others. Possibly one of the links was yours.
 
Sachs SG359011 Lift Support will work. I ordered from Amazon for about $15. I used it on the left side to double the lift capacity with a rack and a bag on the trunk lid.

Nope, that part number will get you a strut about 15" long. Perhaps you were ordering one for the seat? That one is not for the trunk.

So I stupidly went down this rabbit hole again. The part number for the strut given is 9416K17, 40lbs. I ordered the 3 parts given and one end is correct, the eye bolt end is the wrong size to fit a spyder and the strut is over 15" long. WAY too long to fit a spyder trunk. The other part number is 9416K11 which is about 3/4 inch too short to be used for the rear trunk.

Please do not give this information again, its flat out wrong and folks will just waste money ordering it. Now I have $22 worth of 'spare' parts that fit nothing.

Further research in the McMaster Carr catalog with the BRP strut and ruler in front of me, they do not have a strut of the correct length nor correct eye fitting. The BRP ones are custom for application just as BRP told me years ago.

As I recall Mike said the M-C struts were put together from individual parts and pieces, not a complete off the shelf unit. Which way did you come up empty, one or both?

I found the ones from Amazon by Lift Depot noted above worked quite well other than I had to make a spacer for the eye end to accommodate the smaller diameter Spyder bolt. I did exactly as you did including the trip Napa. I found the perfect spacer at Ace Hardware. It fit just like it was made for it.

Excited, I too gave a look at possibly using aftermarket items based on posts here. One post seemed promising, but required buying a series of individual items. Uncertain if the results would be acceptable, I toyed with simply buying oem parts.

Having worked with Gas Springs in other applications before, I knew most likely the issue was pressure loss and not complete seal failure. Opted away from buying any parts, and still never sorted out if the items listed in these Spyderlovers posts would be the equivalent or better than oem.
 
I bought a prop rod from Pierre at CanamSpyderaccessories.com. It was easier than replacing the gas shock. It looks good. works good. Have not been ryding yet so use has been limited to install but seems ok.
 
Here's the quick, easy, and inexpensive solution to a bad trunk gaz shock: Don't replace it! Just get one of the flat, blue, often free LED flashlights from Harbor Freight. It's the perfect size and shape to slip between the trunk hinge and the housing to hold the lid open. It's a good idea to have a flashlight on a vehicle anyhow, so keep it in the trunk and it'll be there for either purpose.
 
Just received and installed new gas shock for trunk lid. Works great. Ordered from Amazon. Offered by Lift Supports Depot, $44.00. Bruce
