True Cost to Own a Spyder

Afterthought: Doing the math was painful. I gave too much information, and it seemed to offend some of you. Sorry for that. It was a real eye opener for me--but I am still happy with the :spyder2:. As others have said, its the fun factor that our toys give us, and cost is relative.

If I had it to do all over again--I probably would.

Didnt offend me brother, looking at the numbers you just have to know that if anyone took any hobby and really assigned appropriate costs to it, that it would mount up. Even if your hobby was college football. Think of the time cost (in hours like you get paid), health benefits (or lack thereof), consumption of food at home or eateries, etc, etc, etc...

When we look at the things we do sometimes its crazy. But being out, being active and having fun the way you want to is important, while I still work, many here have worked long years to now recreate, and this is one hell of fine way to do it. Doc just wanted to feel better about having hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in ways to stop the cops from stopping him.

Speaking of, Hey Doc, I think we should build you a team for the cannonball run. I think the original record was 32:07, and I think it was beaten by a british guy at like 31:20 or something, I read about it in a wired magazine. I think the silver dream can take him.

For my 10k miles a year... give or take.

Two or three oil changes (DYI) $175.00ish for all three
One rear tire installed - $150
Insurance - $250
Inspection - $25

Special one time expenses/repairs:

License tag fixture replacement with aftermarket part - $30
Replacement Powerlet GPS/Phone cable - $50
12,000 mile service - $700

Not a real expensive toy at all by my basic math. I don't count mods, gas, cleaning, etc as cost of ownership.

I don't even want to consider the cost.......
But lets talk about the benefits...
Some day's getting out and putting a few miles of the Spyder is the only thing that keeps me sane, or at least mostly sane.

What ever the cost each of us have paid, it all comes down to, do you enjoy the time you put in the seat? If so, find a way to do it more. If not then maybe it's time to move on.

For me the money I have spent and continue to spend is a small price to pay for the enjoyment I gain, and friends I have made as a result of buying my Spyder. I count my fellow Spyder owners as a second family, some of which I am closer than some of my blood relatives!
My wife and I plan all year for our Spyder trips (Spyderfest and Spyders in the Redwoods), I ride every weekend with friends and VERY often other Spyders.

I have never once regretted my purchase!

If you really count what you're spending, you shouldn't have the bike. I have so many mods into this thing...

As far as maintenance goes, it's part of the privilege of owning a Spyder, so put up the money and keep going.

The Spyder is fun...and fun is worth a lot!
