• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

True Cost to Own a Spyder

docdoru

Doru the Destroyer-Spyder Photo Investigator
Last days of the year, time to close the books. Let's talk about the TCO over 1, 2 or 3 years based on a estimate 20K miles ridden per year.
Including: depreciation, taxes and fees, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs.
For example, oil change price (compared with Porsche Carrera 911, every 7500 miles, using Genuine Porsche parts and Mobil 1 oil 0-40: $220).

I was quoted $ 260 for RT at CPS for oil change, oil filer/etc.

Also $ 423 for rear tire, balanced and installed.

No different than deer hunting, golf, fishing ect.ect.ect.If I sat down and figured out how much venison cost me per pound my wife would,... well you know.Just ride!

You're missing the whole point... :lecturef_smilie:
It's not what you've got IN them that matters... :opps:
It's what you get OUT of them that counts! :ohyea:

Heh.

TCO since 10/15/2011:

Spyder and initial Accesories = $14,900
Delivery = $300
Insurance: 35 + (68 x 2) = $171
Gas = [Spyder]( 2000/31 ) * 3.50 = $225.81 versus [Mustang]( 2000/24 ) * 3.15 = $262.50 net: $36.69 credit
Additions = $300 Crampbuster, TricFenderz, TricLED Tips, TricHalos, DMWMS, IPS
Riding Gear = $600 Helmets, Clothing
Cleaning Supplies = $50 Wipes, Spray ons, Towels
Tires: None Purchased at this point
Maintenance: None Purchased at this point
Depreciation = Unsure, I bought used, I am not looking to learn this because it is a tool that the IRS and dealerships bone you with epicly.

Total: $16,284.31

Planned for next year though will blow this outta the water as I will be building an entire garage around the spyder.
That being said, looking at some of the costing, allowing me to do my own maintenance, and as much of my own servicing as possible, it might well offset the cost. That plus additions (Shocks, Swaybar, LIGHTS MORE LIGHTS, Grips, Wrap / Painting, newly engineered, designed Spyder dog seat), will surely make this all insane.

I will state this though, the opportunity cost of not getting out, seeing the world, being excited, and being able to drive and not feel like I have to read an email, answer a call or take a text makes it priceless. A pure experience of learning to love driving again, with just the world and you or your significant other (or best friend Teddy).

I have been outside more in the past 3 months than any other time in years, I look at the weather everyday, I find myself standing in the office looking outside on beautiful days (regardless of the temperature) thinking about where I could be riding. I feel like a kid again, waiting for my own little adult recess.

What is the cost of NOT feeling like that.

If I had to justify the cost of Kids or a wife????

I would probably be single if I had to justify the cost of kids or my wife. Of course I did waste a lot of money when not a father or husband, so who knows.

Fun seems to cost money, but this is a great way to enjoy the investment!

If you look at the numbers of hours of pure enjoyment, and I include the hours tinkering on my spyder in the garage, it is similar to many other hobbies. Downhill skiing, golf, boating, hot rodding and snowmobiling to name a few.

Plus, nobody says you have to have the dealer change your oil. Also burning down a few motors doesn't help the cost ratio.;)

Are you nuts??? I am soooooo not doing this math. No, sirree!

It's cost me a lot. The Spyder was the cheapest thing I bought. Everything that came after-- mods, gear, tools, more mods, insurance, dealer service, dealer repairs, more mods.... THAT'S what hurt.

Still thrilled beyond compare, but I seriously underestimated by a factor of *at least* three (closer to four) how much $$$ I would spend AFTER I bought the bike.

Honestly, BRP should sell the Spyder like they sell razors: they give away the razors, the blades are where they make the profit! ;)

112.26 Miles Per Day Makes it Cheap!

AK says $56.13 per day - Doru says 20k per year - AAA says $0.50 per mile average auto cost

Just ride 112.26 miles per day and it's the same cost as Granny's Buick!

1- My latest Jet Ski (255 hp) retailed at $13,300 (I paid 11) is only used about 12 times a summer (I have 2 skies) and cost me $45.00 for gas and $8 for tow vehicle gas each afternoon.

2- The Spyder cost me $16,500 , (is fairly inexpensive IF you do your own maintenance)
Provides me with countless hours of farting around on it AND only cost me about $12 for a Whole afternoon of riding!!!

3- I could continue Flying Lessons at $200 an hour in my area?

4- I,ll take 1 and 2 above!

Glad to see....

.... I am not the only one spending more money on my toys (my way of life?) than on mortgage and food combined!

Afterthought: Doing the math was painful. I gave too much information, and it seemed to offend some of you. Sorry for that. I have since deleted the "big tally". It was a real eye opener for me--but I am still happy with the :spyder2:. As others have said, its the fun factor that our toys give us, and cost is relative.

The bottom line for me was $53.16 per day--but I tend to go overboard on accessories. Rationalizing: My cost will continue to go down as I am done investing in accessories. Now I am at the point of upkeep only. Maintainence, insurance, gas, and the everpresent deprecation--although that is a non-cash expense--until trade in or selling time.

If I had it to do all over again--I probably would.
