• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Truck/trailer winch wiring question.

Thinking of adding a 2500lb winch onto the front of my trailer to aid in loading mowers that are having issues.

My question is, will the 12v "charge" or power wire in my 7 way truckside plug run the winch? Basically I would wire up a 7 way male end to the winch lead, and plug it into the truck when needed.

A 2500 lb. Winch will pull at least 50 amps so #10 wire would be the minimum. I don't think that circuit is designed for that kind of load. Better to mount a battery in the trailer and use the charge circuit for it's intended purpose.

To have a winch on the trailer, you will likely need a battery on the trailer as well. The 12v from the truck is only sufficient to slowly charge the battery, no where near what a winch will pull.

Thanks everyone. That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Figured it couldn't be that easy.

I find that if things were actually supposed to be easy my useless brother-in-law would have already done it.
Good luck, add another hour to the install time:rolleyes:

I had a similar issue............

with a Rampage Power Lift Ramp . I ran an extra long (home made) set of jumper cables from the truck battery back to the winch with quick disconnects at each end, eliminating the pesky battery clamps. The quick disconnects and the cables are cheaper than a battery and will outlast many batteries.

I wanted to add a small winch to my enclosed trailer and was contemplating a quick connect setup that I could run to the battery if needed instead of a dedicated battery as charger.

I've got a extra deep cell battery that I'm thinking of adding to a trailer tounge box along with the winch and add a solar trickle charger to keep the battery charged. I'll cut a window out of the tounge box for the winch cable. This will keep the winch covered and out of the elements.
